Well, for the past several years, me and several long time friends would go hang our at a friend's NAPA store as he always has somewhat of an open house/customer appreciation event on New Year's Eve. He is a hot rodder and has turned his NAPA into somewhat of the local speed shop. He serves good chili and atomic coffee at this event and we typically have several old cars show up if the weather is decent. However, I called to check on whether he would be able to do it this year, and for the reasons that everything else has been cancelled this year, he had to cancel too.

So...seems it will likely be go to a chili deal at church tonight, then go home and see if I can stay awake long enough to watch the ball drop in New York...

Oh, and maybe I will spend a little time in the shop this afternoon to see if I can get a car running that I have been messing with. Kids are turning 16 at my house quicker than we can finish projects...

I will look out my window at that truck I bought new two years ago and realise it's worth even less money cause it's another model year older.

I usually stay up until midnight and usher in the new year, but this year I am staying up just to make sure that 2020 actually does leave! Happy New Year everyone and all the best in 2021!

The 2020 desktop screen saver on our office 31 inch monitor.

    Hello,

Recently, since our old hot rod days, I/we have spent New Year’s Eve Day cleaning the house and getting the cars in tip top shape, (wash and if there is time, wax.) My mom instilled the clean house routine since the early days. My wife and I have agreed since 1966. We usually go over to see our son and granddaughter to start off the New Year.

They usually have something going on the exact day of January 1st, so we go over the day before for a short visit, after our early morning house clean up. The Christmas tree usually stays up as per old folklore rules, so we spend New Year’s Day taking down all of the outside decorations/lights and the Christmas tree. It is easier as there was less to put up and less to take down.

As far as 2020 is concerned, it is a wash… (PUN INTENDED) Special events were shuttered, the locked in place directive was put up early and released too soon, then back to the same idea, but more restrictive as the pandemic worsened. We were all affected by the closing and limited access of the restaurants and stores in our own communities.

But, one thing increased, more quality home cooked meals with a wider variety of new meals. It gave us time to get things organized, but why go out when the quality of the meals far surpasses anything available on the take our menus. The local restaurants are struggling, but when the pandemic is over, they will be ramped up like all of us just waiting and doing our thing to get things moving for the betterment of all of us.

My 2020 screen saver on my office desktop 31 inch color monitor was a reminder of the good times of wash and wax detailing in the yard and garage. The photo taken after one of the recent So Cal rainy days and not washing my wife’s car for months of limited driving. Weekly dusting and minor spray and detail was the modus operandi, as the paint was not getting any outside attacks by sun, wind and rain. The only times after alternating driving our two cars was to keep them in nice condition, but no weekly washing or detailing. There was no driving or limited driving, so there was limited detailing and definitely no need for a full on car wash.

But, as coastal So Cal residents are used to almost 345 days of the sun being out and always pleasant weather. Other places in So Cal might get more as we are at the whims of coastal wind and storms. For us, the pandemic has evened out the score everywhere.

As other things have gone up in cost, so has the drive through car wash. The hand car wash would require too close person to person contact, so the automated ones get the weathered grime off. But, because there is less overall driving and less use of the automated car washes, the cost has risen, too. “One Thing Leads to Another…” Stay safe and healthy…

This day starts with remembering what my mother used to say... "a clean house for the new year gives a clean outlook for the future..."

That is cool. That reminds me of a guy I work with who bought a locomotive whistle at a swap meet and brought it in the factory we worked at. His compressor at home didn't have enough pressure so he had a pipe fitter at work hook it to one of the air lines in the plant. It was so loud when he opened it up it scared the shit out of him and he dropped it and ran. It shut production down for a while so everybody could get their heart rate back to normal. I miss that guy.
