    Hi all,
Been a long time reader here, and I need some help with a 283.
Early 60's 283 rebuilt long block
    mild cam, Q jet, Hei

I'm braking in this motor for a friend on my engine stand.
    Starts and runs good...
But when I rev it and let off it dies every time.

the carb, fuel pump ,distributor all came off my 350 and was working fine.
I tried two different 2 bbls, 3 dizzys Hei and points, and I still get the shut off after revin' it.
    Compression 150-138
valves are good at 3/4 turn Hydo

    I can't figure this out.

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers
    Steve

Does it idle before you rev it ?...do you have a flywheel on it or just a flex plate?...if you don't have enough " inertia " or " rotating mass and a relatively lean idle mixture it will most likely do that...

  5. Vacuum leak
    Base timing
Would be my two go to’s at this point
Hook up a vacuum gauge and see what it says
What’s your fuel pressure at? Mechanical or electric fuel pump?

    Thanks gents.
Yeah flex plate, mech fuel pump. not sure of the pressure but the pump came from a 350 and ran great.
I have a vac gauge and its about 17 and fluctuates. acting like a valve not seating. Timing at about 10*
    She idles good before.

    Thanks again

    Hi,
Run through the valve again, zero lash and a 1/8 turn, seems like number 8 exhaust was keeping the valve open at 3/4 turn. The Chinese lifters (second set) are really shet. I have a set in the 350 and it took awhile to bed in.
anywho the motor runs good now, no shutting off after a good rev.

    Thanks all for the help.

    Cheers
    Steve
