This is Led, I live here in the "great state" of California and because of where I live they like to screw us when it comes to DMV fees. I just bought a 1949 Ford truck that is in pretty bad shape but the price was right. My question is, what is the best way to get a vehicle registered, and a new pink without having to bend over when they hand me the bill? The truck hasn't been registered in I don't know how long and the previous owner is dead, I got the truck from his son. Should I say it was an abonded vehicle and put a lean on it or is there a better way? Help if you can. Thanks.

don't lie, just tell 'em whats up.
you got it cheap, the old man died, you don't have a pink, ect..
be cool, tell 'em ya want to do it the right way and listen to what they say.
you might have to get the guys wife, son or next of kin to sign something.
its going to cost something, so don't freak out , this is why registered cars sell for more, and "no pick" means its going to cost ya at the DMV.

The great thing about California is that when the vehicle hasn't been registered in 5 years, the DMV drops it out of the system. You just need to go to the DMV, tell them you have an old truck that hasn't been registered in many years & they give you a form to fill out, then have your local PD come over and sign off on the VIN verification, and take it back to the DMV. Then they hand you a registration card, stickers, and plates, and a few weeks later your Pink comes in the mail. That is one thing thats nice about the DMV in Cali. Old car that haven't been registered in a loooooong time are cake to get re-registered and titled. If it hasn't been registered in under 5 years your best bet is to wait, even if you lien sale it you still have to pay the back reg fees (found that out the hard way). Hope all that helps

    Boys.

Call your local CHP office. Tell the desk sarge that you need a vin VERIFIED. He'll send you to the officer in charge of that. He'll make you an appointment. In the meantime, download or pickup the form. Have the officer fill out his portion and you fill out yours.

Next, get a bill of sale. If you can't, make one. I have my dad make my bills of sale. Usually, I can't get back to the person I bought a car from.

Take both to the DMV. Tell them, you just got the car running YESTERDAY. They will charge you like 50-60 bones to register the car. No insurance needed at that point.......you will need it to run it on the street.

FYI- If you say, oh I've had the truck for 3 months and it RUNS, you will get penalty fees for that time.

They hand you your plates, your tags and your reciept. Come 6-8 weeks, you get your title. Don't forget to get insure as well!

  5. all the other answers are correct.............the cal dmv drops the unregistered (witth no non ops) off the records AFTER 5 years. that's goint to say no one has tried to register or anything in the past 5 years, if they have the 5 year rule starts after that (i bought a truck that was 15 years out but someone started a lien 2 years before....so i had to pay 2 years back fee's with penaties). get a bill of sale (you can make on or print one off the dmv website), get a form for a lost title and have the son fill it out. you might have to have the vin checked by the dmv or chp (1 car i did and 2 others i didn't) but tell them it hasn't seen the road yet (or it's not running). remember the price you put down is the used car tax you'll pay (and the starting point for you registration fee....a few years ago i said i paid $500 for a car, the reg was $40, a friends mom bought a '64 mustang for $7000 and put that for the price and her reg was almost $200 for a couple of years). you'll pay for the current year reg + a fee for a new pink + a fee for new plates (if you don't have the old ones) and trucks cost more for reg then cars. my panel was a lein sale and it cost me $167 to register it a few years ago (i think i put $500 for the sale price) and i had to get new plates......i think the new pink is only about $15. the best answer is if they try to charge alot or give you trouble leave and go to a differnet dmv.
