Good info, thanks. From what I understand, the only gauge that I am running that is voltage dependent is the gas gauge. I have seen a voltage regulator that just bolts one to its positive terminal that looks pretty sharp.

Thanks for the lesson about appropriate posting ethics. It sounds like, the if I go with an older 6 cylinder engine setup, Traditional is the appropriate forum section (same with an original 50's era V8), but if I go with something like a modern crate engine, the H.A.M.B. Is the preferable section, correct?
Thanks again, I don't want to step on any toes here.

  3. Welcome to the HAMB RC41.
Nice car you got. Sounds like you've got good plans for it.
Cruzin down the highway this coming Spring will be a hoot.

How's the wiring? Original cloth covered? Look for worn/bare spots.
Nearly torched my 49 Ford last month with an under dash short! Original wiring was way past it's prime so we picked up a new original style cloth covered harness from Shoe Box Central.

And don't forget to carry that fire extinguisher.....

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, the wiring is original cloth covered wire. From all that I can see so far, it is in pretty decent shape, one of the benefits of SoCal life for cars. I notice that the horns have no wiring to them and the horn relay is without any wires, so I will probably get some of the modern cloth covered wire to hook them up, just to keep with the theme. It will still probably look out of place, because it will be pristine in contrast to the original "patina" wiring.

  5. A small block is a small block. Don't paint yourself into a corner with stupid*****.

If you decide that you want to build to a specific era and want to build it like a concourse car then yes you have to use only parts available to that era, but if you are only building period correct you may miss it a year or so with your engine block and no one will be the wiser. For example you may want to build it like a car was built in '56 but the only block you can find is a '57 283 block. The only real difference is the numbers on the block and the bore size. No one can see the bore size.

Someone will badmouth you for it but their apparent lack of character should be no reason for you to not have a good time. ;)

My fun will not be diminished by posting in the correct forum, but I don't want to diminish others fun by blatantly posting in the correct forum. I'm just trying to be polite in someone else's house, and follow their rules.
I am not building concourse, for sure, and I think I had an initial misunderstanding on what period correct meant. I thought that period correct was what the outward appearance was.
If I put a V8 in the 41, it will probably be a modern mill, nothing period correct. I'm just looking to modernize the aspect of my car and make it possible to be a daily driver if I so want it to be.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

RC41 that is correct. If you go with modern post 65 items it is preferred that it be done or shall I say perhaps made to appear old (Traditionally inspired).
For example have a look (search out engine threads) at some of the engines for styling ideas. Pre 65 dressed smallblocks are awesome things of beauty. They of course go and sound as nice as they look. Not saying don't be individual but have a look also for other cars as your own here (do a search) for other things done such as interiors, paint, body mods if any, and wheels etc.
You can't build a street rod and float it here no matter what. Again as others have said poke your nose around and enjoy searching and gleaning knowledge. Not trying to police at all just understand through research what your car would have looked like pre 65 and pick your theme. One more thing if your running later model modern stuff it is better to not highlight these as the membership are typically not interested in all things modern. Lastly the HAMB forum area is where I post anything about my Hotrod and that is in respect of the guidelines and it is all good. All areas are great in their own way. Great site it is and represented here is the best things Traditional Hotrod/Custom and inspired.
Sorry long winded but important. Happy New Year.

Thanks for the info. I will probably move over to the H.A.M.B. side with my quest.
Happy new year to you too.

Wow! Thanks for that. I would love to see that engine in my 41. I have some great Rams Horn chrome manifolds that would look great in it!
    Happy New Year to all...
