Hey Dom and everyone, Been real busy changing drivetrains (and just about everything else) in the "Anderson Olds" '69 W31. I think I could be on my third small block Chevy for what this Oldsmobile stuff costs. I'm hoping to be at Atco at the end of this month for their Nostalgia show but realistically I doubt I'll make it. The fellow doing my trans. (Jerry MacNeish) broke his '67 Z28 stocker in Charlotte so that might put me a little behind schedule. Until next time.....Dave.
What is the current count for "Jr. Stock" for the York show? C'mon guys---We need a GOOOOOOD showing! By the way, that old '57 2dr wagon I told you all about a long time ago (Reich Bros.?) is still sitting in the same spot were it was parked about 30 years back. The last time I saw the car, it was in outstanding condition--totally rust-free with the same Silver and Black paint scheme it was raced with. Not long ago, I checked and still visible was a glimpse of the right front fender under a mountain of boxes and other stuff piled on top of it in the same make-shift storage facility. Oh well.......maybe some day.....
Dover Drag Strip related, I will try to post my photos of Dover 1968. I/Stock; 1957 Chevy's and 66' Biscaynes 327/275HP Just what engine would the 57' Chevy have to run in 1968 (12.00 - 12.49 class) 283/270HP dual-quad?? PC
Colesy -- Just wondering if Mr. Worrell's Pack Rat(pic in this post) ran just "a tad" quicker because of the weight loss due to the absense of that headlight ring on his old Olds "Rocket"?? LOL! Its a safe bet he was one of those guys that bought his car for $50 bux or less and went racing!! Then that little fun turned him into a national competitor for years to come! I remember when you could find stockers that were capable of running on or under their national record advertised for sale in National Dragster for $350 bux or less! Keep those pix and stories comin'!!
Johnny 57' I think this is 1968 NHRA Classifications for the 57' Chevy (non-wagon) G/S - 283/283 F.I. I/S - 283/270 Dual-quad J/S - 283/250 F.I. K/S - 283/245 Dual-quad L/S - 283/220 4-barrel O/S - 283/185 2-barrel P/S - 283/162 2-barrel PC
I was reading those class results for '64 and '65---some interesting stuff. Bob Luck in D/S (whose pic finally emerged recently) and Sonny Freeman who was doing double duty driving his own '59 Chevy in H/SA and the first of Anderson Olds' racers which at that time was a '65 442 in B/S and BB/S. I see Strickler a couple of times, also. What car would have been campaigned by the "Strickler Bros." in F/SA? Plenty of other notables, too. Until next time.....Dave.
Johnny 57' Your Pop ran his 66' 327/275HP Biscayne in I/S in 1968, at Dover. The black 57' Chevy 283/270HP I/S that the two brothers from Brewster (20 minutes from the track), ran 13.70's. Won Class Trophy every week, and drove your Pop crazy. He couldn't catch them. The I/Stock record for 68' was low-low 13.00's. I think 13.08 or so. Top speed, maybe 107mph. PC
Built our P/S 59 Biscayne for $600 from a $45 hulk with a blown motor behind a gas station. Rats had eaten the seats so bad that the tech inspector "suggested" we not show up again without some K-Mart slip covers over the seats. Outside wasnt much better, definetly a sleeper stocker. They would send you home with it today which suits me just fine.
Johnny 57', You Pop ran his 66' Biscayne car at the 1968 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals, in July at New York National Speedway, in I/S. Frank Iaconio's 57' Chevy 'Banana I' won at the 69' Super/Stock Magazine Nationals at York, US30 in August 69'. It ran in H/S with the 283/283 HP Fuel Injection. On the national scene, 12.90's for the H/S cars, local tracks for Class trophy's probably 13.60's. PC
Just to clarify, what hp 283 would be run in a '57 Chevy (non wagon) for H/Stock in 1968, and for I/Stock in 1969? -Dean
What car would have been campaigned by the "Strickler Bros." in F/SA? Plenty of other notables, too. Until next time.....Dave.[/QUOTE] Not absolutely sure, but I believe the Ice Blue 58 1:32 or so in this video is Terry Strickler, later sold to 2 guys up in W-B/Scranton, Pa area. Not sure if this is the car your referring to as this was a stick car, but it looks like F/S on the window. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydvcA_O-TNg&feature=related
Mr. Colesy (Encyclopedia of Junior Stock) is the MAN! HOTROD28AR, Looks like 1968 H/S, 283/283hp F.I. 210 Hardtop and 283/270hp 150 Business Coupe. H/S cars went up to I/S in 1969. The 'Banana I' car (H/S, 1969 S/S Magazine Nationals Winner) was a 150 Business Coupe 283/283hp F.I. That car was classed in (66' E/S), (67' D/S), (68' G/S) and (69' H/S) and eventually I/S for 1970 (11.00 -11.49 wt/hp). Johnny 57',,,I follow up later, and what your Pop did to the 66' Biscayne. Paul
Mr. Colesy, Thank You, and glad to contribute. * Biscaynes, that is a great photo of the 'Banana I' Don't want to start trouble already, but Mr. Bob Shirley should look at that photo of Frank's car, and see lettered on the lower bottom front quarter-panel 283 c.i/h.p, (H/S for 69'). Or am I missing something? Paul
I saw the car several times at 75&80 back in the "stone Age". It was a 348 with a stick. I believe Terry was a cousin or nephew of Dave's.
Frank Iaconios car was NEVER raced by him with anything but a fuel injection unit. First as a 283 HP in various classes and a 4 speed then as a 250 HP powerglide car when 4 speeds were banned in '57 Chevy's ...
Johnny 57' There were at least (4) 57' Chevy's (283/270HP) cars in I/S in 1968 at Dover racing your Pop. The black 57' with silver panel and Cragars (nicest of the bunch) was from Brewster, and also the quickest in class, at 13.70's. Also, in I/S was another white 66' Biscayne 327/275HP, and a 67' Pontiac Firebird with a 326/285HP (H.O. Engine). That I/S class in 68' and J/S class in 69' was always loaded!!! Your Pop was running 14.70's with 4.30 gears, while also driving it on the street. Yes, it had white steel wheels, and the car was always Sierra Tan. PC
Spotted recently with fresh paint/lettering and new decals ... slightly smaller! ... from post # 4540
I wonder who will have the (red, white and blue) striped t shirt concession at the York reunion this year.
Had several pictures given to me a few weeks back. thought I'd share a few. I believe from 68 or 69 Nationals Rick
Terry was a cousin of Dave's. Terry's name was also on several of Dave's cars later on including the Corvette. Terry still lived in York and passed away a few years ago.
I ran into a Jr. Stock racer at the Stafford Springs Swap meet on Sunday, who still races his original stocker and will have it at the York Nostalgia Drags (I think he is going to the show Friday and Saturday, not sure about the car). Maybe someone will recognize him, he said it was a '62 Chevy 409 9-Passenger wagon, white with a red and blue stripe down the center. -Dean
