Saw the car listed on ebay. My memory is short but I believe it was 5-6 years ago.

It was because Ford's slow revving 'Y' block (239/312 cu in - 1954-To-1957) engine series never really 'caught on' with the racing community. The exception, of course, was the 300 HP Paxton/ McCullough-Blown 57 312.

Fords didn't do well at the dragstrip until their performance 'renaissance' in 1962 ... starting with the big-block 406

... And yes, there were a bunch of sucessful 57 Ford Jr Stock cars, but they were all equipped with that 'underated' 300HP/312 Cu In Supercharged engine.

Speaking of Buicks :D, anyone have a quality shot of Lennie Kennedy's 65 G/SA Skylark? This car ran under the record with a 401

To the best of my knowledge Kinston was never an airport.

I raced against Charlene Woods wagon in Napierville Quebec when I had my 67 Chevelle I/SA wagon, mid to late 70's? Henry.

Thanks for that post Colsey. Sad about Tom -- a rising star! I see the CC article used the term "Ultimate Junior Stocker" ... could that have been Joe Allread's old 'handyman' 57 wagon that Tom had?

And by the way, that's sure a 'classic' shot of 'Buster' by the tree!

WoW! ... as usual, you are 'right there' to 'fill in the blanks' Thank you!
And by the way ... is "Yahoo's Stock/SS Drag Racing Group" still active? And do you know if they're 'aware' of THIS thread?

Thanks, I see ... looks like Peterson publications was just 'overusing' the term 'Ultimate' at the time. Quite like the NASCRASH crowd just luvs the term "Awesome."

By the way, great shot of Dave B. making all of that 185 HP smoke the 7 inchers! And just look at the PACKED stands watchin the 'little guys' run!

that 'unknown' '59 has boertman's number on the window. it's possibly the new owner of the car after he built the '69 biscayne, which had #37.

    Brandon,
Actually, there were more of them than you might think. I'll post pictures of 2 more that ran at Kinston on a weekly basis.

This reply is a little late as I was at Bruce Larson's yesterday.

Bob, Tim had this car up until about 2003 when he sold it and built a Firehawk for Stock. The Taylor's built the engine probably in the late 1980's. I was there when Jeff ran the dyno. I think he was running Comp at the time.

I saw Jerry McNeish at the Dutch Classic a few weeks ago and was surprised to see that he is running a car that he has owned for some time, one that is perfect! There is now way I would race this car if it were mine!
