Thanks for posting all the great pictures. That Jenkins nova was my all time favorite Hero in the early 70s.
This was my deuce in 1970, it had 350HP 327 four speed, 513 12 bolt rear. Lots of fun Ron

In the 1960s, Canadian Pontiacs were built on Chevy chassis'. Full size on Impala, Beaumonts on Chevelle and Acadians on Chevy II. These cars were never sold in the USA but as I was going through a friends old photos, I noticed that Knafel Pontiac out of Akron Ohio was running an Acadian, probably with an L79. Must have looked strange to Pontiac fans.

That is actually Rex White in the test mule for the NASCAR 427 mystery motor at the GM Arizona testing grounds, I believe, not a drag car.

^^^^ Pretty sure that's Doc Dixon running the Acadian for Knafel. He also piloted one of their famous Tin Indian GTOs. (& later went on to do pretty well nationally with his own rides)

I seem to remember the 427 was the reason it was an Acadian, & not a Nova. There's more to the story, but it's been a while since I heard it....:D

Canadian Pontiac dealers seemed to live outside the GM laws. 409s and later 427s were easy to come by. Maybe it was the fact that even though Beaumonts and Acadians were built by the Canadian division, the word Pontiac never appeared on them. I remember my friends going to Highland Motors and configuring just about anything they wanted.

Anyone have a pic of Larry Ruel? Orange 55 Handyman Wagon with silver wheels? A relative of his is looking for any photos on facebook. Thanks, tommyd.

Any info on this car? Driver, location? I realize the photographer was photographing down low, but that is some great weight transfer!

  29. I have a question I hope some of you folks in this thread can help me with. I've been researching the 1961 Indy Nationals and specifically Super Stock.. I have obtained a 1961 program that contains the entries but is not broken down into classes. I know they ran a class called Optional Super Stock which basically was the forerunner to AFX. Did they also run SS and the cars with the latest updated engine "packages" run O/SS or did O/SS cover all of the top door slammers? Is a breakdown available of eliminations in O/SS anywhere? I've been trying to find a 1961 National Dragster with the event coverage but I haven't found one yet. The Hot Rod/Car Craft coverage of the event only hits the highlights and mentions both Dyno and Beswick were DQ for unapproved parts.
I feel in many ways the O/SS class at Indy in 1961 was a very historical event. It basically opened NHRA's eyes to how popular SS racing was to become. It also was the "breakout" event for Chryslers drag racing program with the success of the Ramchargers there.

I'd really like to learn more about that event but photos and detailed coverage is hard to find. Any help you guys may offer is appreciated.
