That's the first picture I think I've seen of this car as a stocker. I have a magazine article on it after they started bracket racing it.
Now all we need is a New thread for the Modified Production cl*** to go along with Junior Stock. I still find it had to believe that the NHRA thought it made sense to do away with Junior Stock and Modified Production cl***es. These two cl***es were wildly popular with the fans. Jimbo
there is one, not very active unfortuately... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/modified-production.348502/
Man, I could rack old photos all day on that thread. I have quite a few and p*** over a bunch of them every day because I just haven't made a file for them yet.
This guy beat us in the cl*** final at Indy one year. Watched one of his guys meet him before the scales and stick the rear seat bottom back in the car. Wonder how much it weighed? lol!
In this 4 minute video we get the 55 from the grump and his camaro not sure what cl*** the camaro is in.
Wow an H/S 57 Chevrolet that does not have a Stahl Headers decal from back in the 60's look unusual. Jimbo
Hope I'm not too late here - Old Thread, New Question: We are having a discussion on a few forums about how Grumpy's L79 ran those 118.1mph speeds in A/S NHRA rules. I've tried every trick I can in my own simulator, its hard to match. I've read Grump ran an Edelbrock intake, but I thought intakes had to be stock original in stock cl***. But, at the back of Larry Davis "Drag Racing the Family Sedan" book, it says that for 1966, any Similar intake was legal. So that would make Grump (or anybody) legal in Stock Cl*** eg A/S with an Edelbrock or other intake. The 1962, 1976, or 1989 NHRA Rule Books would not allow intake changes in stock cl***. But, other than urban legend, I cant find what the 1966 Rule Book says. Any chance you can scan that 1966 page (stock cl*** intakes) or at least describe what it says? EDIT: Hope to not be a hog but how bout the 1967 NHRA Rules on intakes too (Stock and Super Stock)? One thing I just thought of is, maybe NHRA was getting aftermarket pressure to allow other intakes. So for 1966 ONLY they said "ok, any similar intake". Then for 1967, Super Stock appeared, any intake / any cam, so maybe even in 1967 it switched back to "original intake only in Stock Cl***es". That's a reach but would explain all the urban legend. I don't have 1966 or 1967 Rule Books so just guessing. Much thanks
In 1966 NHRA allowed the A/S and A/SA cars to use any intake(the Grump used a Edelbrock c4b) and any cam.The other cl***es had to have the stock legal cam ,and intake.
Check this out. A really nice resource compliments of a H.A.M.B. guy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/nhra-rule-books-1958-present.870742/
THAT is an AWESOME contribution to the history of our hobby and indeed our nation itself!!! And, it answered the question: 1966 is the ONE & ONLY year in which you could run "any cam any intake" in a cl*** other than Super Stock (Super Stock in the early years was called S/S). 1966 also looks like the 1st year that you could run "any intake" in ANY stock (or S/S) cl***. This was clearly the transition to the SS/A to SS/E cl***es of 1967. My thanks on behalf of myself but many others as well for all that scanning work.
Thanks go to H.A.M.B. member chevy454. He did a lot of research; I only p***ed on the results of his work on his thread.
