I've only seen one B & W photo of the car in a magazine from the final round of the 1972 NHRA Springnationals. J.S.
I guess I do remember it ..as Marina blue..He didn't run it for very long at all.The record must have gotten lowered. Everybody had 255 cars in 72.. Then the Chevy II's emerged in SS.
I was perusing another site I frequent, YellowBullet.Com, that's primarily a drag racing oriented site. One of the forums is called, Trash Or Be Trashed (TOBT), and there's a thread called, Old Drag Photos. There are LOTS of old drag racing pics, and many are of Junior Stocker and Stock Cl*** drag cars. LOTS of older dragsters also. Check it out! The chrome headers on that 57 right above, Lunn's Super Shell, E/S car, are unusual to say the least. I like that "Tombstone" style Christmas tree with the two convertibles racing. I was born one generation too late to really enjoy all those cars first hand (that and a Father who would't allow "MY" interests). I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Butch, I know we are on the other end of the country from each other. But it sounds like we come from the situation. I just turned 58 in October. So I was just behind this stuff. And had a father that was into planes and flying. Cars were just to get you back and forth. Gene.
That's basically my history too. That "Tombstone style Christmas tree" is actually an old railroad signal according to a friend of mine.
Yes, great shots Johnny, as well as Tommy, Loud, Gary and the rest of the regular contributors. Wish I could participate but most of my stuff is slightly OT. I'd never chance getting one of my favorite threads shut down. Hope you all have a happy New Year, and know that your contributions to this thread (and others) are viewed and appreciated by a bunch of us. Keep 'em comin'...
1967 Plymouth Valiant Signet. This car is running in E/SA. Was this car available with a (little-known) 340 engine option? Or is it a solid lifter hi-po 4-barrel 273 engine? I can't see this car running in E/SA with a 318 2-barrel powerplant.
Jim Sartwell was my grandfather and he owned/drove the "Little Terror" '57 Chevy with Bob Luck....he also had a '68 Camaro called "Sea Terror" that was an NAAR and NHRA record holder in '69 in E/Stock and was the first "stock" Camaro to break into the 11 second bracket...in '70 it was an F/Stock record holder and was noted as the fastest '68 Z/28 in the country.
I don't think I ever saw a Hudson Jet on the drag strip, but my Dad briefly had one. It was burgundy with a black top and continental kit. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Up through 1969 NHRA allowed cars in Stock cl***es built prior to June 1, 1961 to use any engine of the same make from that model year to be run in a different body of the same make. That meant the big twin carb engine from a Hudson Hornet was allowed to be run in the smaller Hudson Jet. For those thinking how could that big six fit in the small Hudson Jet, well some serious m***aging of the firewall came into play.
Great stuff Johnny_Steele I think you must be in a NHRA DIV1 land of ned section where you are getting these latest ones. I know I have seen most of the latest ones run.
Had the opportunity to see the White Lightning at York in 2014. A really complete car from the day with only some newer gauges and braided lines added by the original owner. It even still has the adjustable Cure Ride shocks on the rear. I just hope who ever ends up with it leaves it as is and doesn't restore it.
