Pat is correct, lbs. per horsepower has always been the formula for Stock and SuperStock. The persons best qualified to respond to the original question would be The Kentuckian, a respected tech official or someone who campaigned a '55 Chevy at that time such as Gary Glover because there are several variable factors that could influence the answer. The most common combination for '55 Chevrolet sedans in 1970 would have been the 180 horsepower 265 cu. in., four-barrel "power pack" although there was an earlier era during which the 195 horsepower Corvette 265 might have been campaigned in a sedan. Further, there are two different body configurations that might have been used by this racer. This is, I believe, based on the quarter panel trim, the 210 model, but the Guide lists both a standard sedan (business coupe?) that would have had no back seat and had a lower shipping weight than the 6 p***enger Club Coupe. In order to tell which combination would have fit into Q/S in 1970 we would need to know which configuration was used by that racer and what cl***ification factor to each cl*** as ***igned by the 1970 Cl***ification Guide. Cl***es were added and designations were changed on an annual basis. I don't have a 1970 Rule Book at hand so Travis or someone else who has that year's Guide would have the information needed to provide answer to your question.
In today's cl***es with a factored horsepower of 197, a '55 business coupe with no back seat and automatic trans breaks at 16.28. With a manual transmission it breaks at 15.81. A 6-p***enger sedan breaks at 16.43 w/automatic and at 15.64 w/manual trans. Anyone who made a practice of bench pressing a cast-iron Powerglide as opposed to a standard 3-speed trans back in the day, can attest to the 123# weight difference. Needless to say, at age 86 (rapidly approaching 87), I don't do much of that kind of work these days.
