NHRR Moving from B.G.!!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Troublemaker427, Sep 28, 2006.

  1. The NHRR is moving to Columbus!!! See the below from Steve Gibbs of NHRA:

If you have heard any rumors regarding the NHRR being moved from Bowling Green to Columbus....they are true.
This was a very tough decision to make, and not without some real apprehension, as we really loved the setting at Beech Bend Park. On the other hand, we were simply not making the progress necessary to resolve the increasing traffic problems, along with numerous other operational concerns. We're definitely not burning any bridges with the Bowling Green folks, and who knows what may happen if the problems get resolved in the future.

I hope we can transfer the same NHRR spirit to Columbus, and continue to produce an event that remains enjoyable to all. The event will continue to be on Father's Day weekend - June 15-17, 2007. Anyone looking for rooms should check into the Reynoldsburg, Ohio area.

I would be lying if I said I didn't have mixed feelings about this, but I'm certainly aware of the issues that made it necessary . I hope you can all continue to lend your support.

I'll try to keep everyone up to date as details evolve.

    Steve

Damn that Lawyer and his road. He is the reason for the traffic problem. I'm only 40 minutes from bowling green. It was too good to be true. Excellent event close to home.

I heard rumors at one time that beech bend was going to pack up and move about 30 miles south. Suppose to be better facilities.

    This can't be good.
At what facility in Columbus??? Certainly NOT the same dreadful blacktop that the GG show is held?? IS there a vintage style racetrack in Columbus??

I take it that this will be at nationals trails in columbus? I have never been to Nat Trails, what is it like? I would guess it is completely opened with no shade and no old time track feel like there was at BG.

What are your opinions on the move?

Oh know, Please say it aint so. The traffic sucked but it was something to get used too, Once you got in who cared about leavinh anyway. Plenty of shade, old style feel, I just dont know if it will ever be the same.

Yes, it is moving to Nationals Trails.

Yes, the traffic was an issue at Beech Bend, but like someone else noted you just plan your mornings a little earlier to get around that. No biggie.

Beech Bend Raceway, with all its flaws, was perfectly suited for an event of this nature. National Trails just doesn't hold a candle to Beech Bend, and frankly, is too modern a facility for nostalgia. The fans at Beech Bend are so close to on-track action, and will now be farther away from the "feel".

The NHRR was a financial windfall for the Bowling Green area for the last 4 years. I'm sure many of us felt the pinch after year one with the hotel/motels inflating room rates for that weekend. Time will tell if the city and track will miss the income from that event to work swiftly enough to resolve the issues that prompted this move.

Well looks like at 1100 miles from my house now I would rather go to Bakersfield, CA to the other HHR, probably not be as cold and definalty roadster weather, i hope they change their minds quick

  11. National Trail ain't much!!! Modern tower, etc... NHRA moved their national event to Norwalk for next year. I bet this is payback for that!!! NHRA is providing them with a big money maker for the loss of the national event. I'm afraid this is the begining of the end for this event. It won't even come close to having the "feel" B.G. has. I would rather drive 700 miles to B.G. like I did then to drive 400 to Columbus like I will have to next year....

I remember seeing in a paper a couple of years ago, that the NHRR brought in several million dollars. I figured the city would of gotten invloved and settle the road dispute. Now they won't have all that $$ coming in.

Ahhh shit. This was my favorite show every year and I really looked forward to it. Hell, we were already making plans for next years' deal.

    Suck.

Yeah, the traffic was bad, but I had a bigger problem with assholes zipping around in their golf carts.

Looks like a whole new group of people get to learn why we call in Nasty Trails.

At first, I got REAL excited thinking, Great! It's closer to me and I can afford to go. Then I realized it would be at Nasty Trails. So much for that idea...

Makes me even more mad that the wonderful, forward thinking county commissionors in the Springfield area shot down building an all new track here. What a great bunch of folks that was...

I was gonna make '07 my first reunion.

Looks like a real loss for that area.

I guess for nostalgia events in the KY, we still have the Nats in L'ville.

Well crap. I guess I'll stick with Indy Goodguys then.

I did a different show at NTR not too long ago and I can't put my finger on why... but I just did not enjoy myself at all.

All I know is that '07 will prove to be a strange year in vintage drag racing indeed...

Never been to BG, but have been to NTR, it's okay, but it's not nostalgic by any stretch...

Two Words. Morocco Indiana. Maybe it is too small though.
Right on 41. I always liked going to races there.

Also there is Charleston IL, but it kind of sucks, only 1/8th mile.

I was planning on going to BG next year too.

It is shaping up that there is only one true nostalgia/vintage drag race in the country... The HAMB Drags.

Bowling Green has the character and feel that is similar to Famoso.

Moving it to a McDragstrip might be ok from an access perspective, but it will definitely lose the feel of a "Reunion".

Sucks as far as a racing stand point. If it didnt the NHRA would not have finally pulled their national event and moved it to Norwalk. Also the NHRA owns Nat Trails and is looking to fill the schedule at this track to make up for lost revenue from moving the national event. This is soley my opinion. It is not as nostaglic as Beech Bend.

National Trails Raceway-Too antiquated for an NHRA Powerade event, too modern for a nostalgia event.

Anyone ever been to National Trails in June when severe weather pops up, or the grounds turn into lakes? Not fun.

what about the camping, lots of people and familys came to Beech Bend for the camping and stayed for the car show and all the fun that weekend.it's400 miles closer for me;but it was a fun drive there . national trails sucks. they did a land balance there and paved the pro pits but did nothing about the drainage. when it rains, and it does there,it FLOODS.
    just my thoughs.

I'm with MCQUEEN on this one! Lets get together and start putting our heads together! We all together could do something really crazy there!

  29. It's strange, when the Mopar Nats moved to Indy from National Trail, everybody cried they wanted it back in Columbus. I've been to both, and Indy was definately the better setup.

I've never been to an HHR, so I can't comment there, but I guess it's a little bit closer to home so I might try this year.

damn, at least i got to go to beech bend once, and it was worth it. it's only an hour and a half to nat. trail and six hours to beech bend, but the track was so cool to be that close to the action. national trail used to have the same feel back in the 80's when i was a kid, but i went there a few months back and it seemed like you were a mile away from the track.
i would rather drive the distance for that feel.
