And just one more thought - the attitude dickheads could learn a whole lot from our very own HAMBAndy.
Sounds like you harboured some resentment to go out of your way to piss on his parade a week later. And you're proud of it. Good job. In situation's like this, be the bigger adult and leave it be.
So I'm trying to understand all this. Please give me a hand. I BOUGHT my house...does that make me a checkbook homeowner.....I think not. I have no desire to build a house. It was the way to get what I did not have the talent to do. I have 2 cars that I have been working on for years but are not finished. I buy a really cool car. Am I just a checkbook hot rodder...I think not. It was the way to get what I did not have the talent to finish. There are jerks everywhere. Maybe we should all take a lesson from Denise.....she seems to have a good handle on this car thing. There are people with chips on their shoulder everywhere. It's just life...get used to it my 2 cents hrm2k
Although I've built every old car I've owned, I think there is nothing wrong with buying a rod. Everybody's money is green and chances are folks like this are a big help when it comes to keeping the hobby alive while the rest of us cheapskates and poor folks dig through wrecking yards, yardsales and Craiglist to scrounge up the next part we need for our own cars. Don't be hate'n because this is not your style of car or personality. The guy may be a little unpolished when it comes to talking about his car but its obvious that he's proud of the car and he's enjoying the car.....and isn't that what this HOBBY is all about? Getting out with your car and having fun? There are absolute snobby, immature little dickheads on both sides of the fence when it comes to who built the car, what parts are in it and how much of the 'lifestyle' they represent...... and they all seem to be taking it all much too seriously. Lighten up folks....this is supposed to be fun. -Bigchief.
Unfortunately, jerks are everywhere, not just at car shows and also not just associated with any one type of car. Some people are just asses and it has little to do with how much money they may or may not have or whether they work on their own car or not. I have certainly run into some not rich people who work on their cars and they are the biggest asses I know of. One owns a transmission repair shop right next door to me. Some people are asses all the time, some are only some of the time but also most everyone can be on occasion. Maybe you just caught him at a bad time or day.
Some people, (like myself) do not trust their welding and fabricating skills enought and hire some work out. I'm not only tryingto not kill myself but also you if you are in the wrong place at the wong time. Checkbook rodders work, make money and pay people to do their stuff? Hire a machinist to do some motor work, checkbook. Hire a trans guy, checkbook. No room to paint, checkbook. Some guys here kill me. Did you make and rool your own steel? I do most of my work myself but some crap I don't touch. Some don't do any. I do agree that some are assholes but for the most part are good guys. I also own a Hawiian shirt.
The persons attitude is what counts in my book. I have a good friend that has money but no talent when it comes to cars. He LOVES cars of all kinds. His daily driver alternates between a late model Porsche Carrera and an Aston Martin. He also has a 32 highboy and a pro touring 67 Nova among a bunch of other cars. Nope, he doesn't know his ass from an open end. But, he is as nice a guy as you ever want to meet. We are equals even though he probably earns more in a year than I will earn in twenty. On the other hand, I have met a number of do-it-yourself rodders that are complete assholes and not deserving of my time. It all depends on the individual.
Heres a good one for you.A buddy of mine and his girlfriend were at a two day show in Okla City.as spectators..He was building a 33 Willys coupe at home. They come on this guy with a Willys that had a sign up that he was looking for a set of trunk hinges for it.My Buddys girlfriend says to him"I've got a set of those" the guy looks down his nose at her and says in a surly voice"Sure you do".Pissed her off so bad she flew back to Dallas and got the hinges, walked up to the guy and says. What are these? His jaw dropped and tried to set a price for them. She told him she wouldnt sell them to him for any price after the comment he made.doubting that she had a set.one way to get at these pricks
I took my pile to a drive-in burger joint in Dallas last Saturday. It was jam packed with all kinds of rods, muscle cars, and vintage autos. I parked in between a '71 blown Camaro and a Nomad. Now, my ride isn't anything special but I've put a lot of time, sweat, money, and bloody knucks into it so I have some pride. The Camaro guy was all friendly and eager to talk. The couple with the Nomad sat in their lawn chairs and stared straight ahead. I mean, you could practically see tumbleweeds blowing around them and hear the crickets chirp. I got the impression it was me and my rustmobile that turned them off. I had a burger, a shake, and a good time. Maybe they did, too. Either way it didn't bother me or the two dozen other folks that I made friends with. dka
Is this "Better Homes and Gardens" forum or what ? We're not talking GTOs and Camaros or cottages here. Hotrods and Customs are built by someone not reassembled or purchased as is. The point is, if you built it, you have not only more knowledge of the car but more of an appreciation for what it takes to build them. The same goes for those who have built anything of any kind. That person to me is not better by any means than another, but much more interesting to talk to than someone who wants to discuss polishes, and stickers. I'm just saying I'd rather meet the person who built it than the guy that owns it. There is a reason people get autographs from the players and not the guy who owns the team. Do I roll my own steel ? No, but I think that would be cool to take it that far, as I build everything possible on my own stuff not because I care what you think but because I enjoy building cars (actually most anything but working on houses) and going fast. You know, the whole ticket in the first place. Everyone has there own limits, however if you are not building or rebuilding the majority of your own parts, its not the same, sorry, its not. That doesn't mean you can't like cars, have a vast knowledge of them or own them but you are missing out and possibly missing the largest part of traditional.
