Nine inch axle lengths

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, May 4, 2009.

  1. Is there a list of nine inch axle lengths?

I know there are a lot of different lengths, 28 spline fwiw.

We may have a bent axle on a guys car and luckily it's the right side . . . which is usually the 'short' one in stock form.

The left side axle housing being the one usually cut down for narrowing and the right side left stock length so as to end up with a 56" drum flange to drum flange for roadsters and the like.

  3. It might be easier if you measure it and post the length. I have a Hollander that shows lengths but not in a list format. Both 8 and 9 inch housings used the small bearing 28 splined axles....

If you do a search on the HAMB you will find a 9 inch diff thread where somebody actually posted how to calculate the axle lengths by knowing the housing width etc.

It is worth the search as there is other interesting stuff on it also.

  6. Thanks guys.

    It helps a lot.

I have 3 or 4 OLD Hollanders :D and they list axle shaft lengths separately ...

Tell me how long your axle shaft is ... and which wheel bearing you have and I will look and see if I can match it up.

  8. If I pull the axle today, I'll let you know.

Headed out to the garage in a few minutes to do the dial indicator bit.

It may turn out to be the wheel that's bent . . . which is a hard to find son of a gun.

So I'm hoping it's the axle.

A big pickup backed into the car, missed the body entirely and the front sidewall of the rear tire on a highboy roadster took the brunt of the el smacko.

Didn't break the wheel rim flange or anything, but the wheel/axle assembly/whatever is wobbling.

  9. Looks like a non-problem.

What I'm guessing is, when the roadster was hit, the truck bumper hit tire only and that cushioned things.

It helped as well that the car was sitting in a gravel driveway and looking over the tracks this morning the car went sideways a few inches.

I think what fooled me yesterday was getting the rear of the car up in the air and watching for lateral wheel runout.
Appeared to be too much, but it was probably just the area where the tire sidewall is joined and it was doing the back and forth bit.

Dial indicated on the aluminum wheel rim flange and the left was .030 - .035 runout.

Did the right side out of curiosity and it was .025 - .030 runout.

Ran the car out on the highway and at 85 it's as smooth as it ever was.

75 per speed limit, most travel at 80 and sometimes 85 just to stay out of the way of the big trucks.

If a list of Ford axle shaft lengths exists, I'd like to have a copy of it. When I shortened one side of my 8-inch to put the pumpkin in the center, I had to sort through dozens of 28-spline shafts until I found one the right length.
