I have a 1948 styline deluxe that I wm trying to get running right to just get it running in and out to the garage. I've made a jumper switch that I have hooked to the positive terminal of my 6 volt (yea thats righ it's a 6 volt - want to make it a 12 volt but man that sure sounds hard). Anyway, I no getting any fire out of the coil wire when I put it on the bloce or to a plug or anything. If I hook up my volt meter to the solenoind/starter smallscrew ad bump it off an on the power goes to 6 volts. Then hooked up to the coil I get nothing. Where is the lead on the positive post of the coil supposed to go? Does it go to the starter/pushbutton switch? I just want to see some power somewhere, someone please help a rookied work thorough this. Thanks and God Bless
well first off its not that hard to convert to 12v what u need to do is make sure u have a good connection on ur batt that means ground too and the positive side of ur coil needs to go to the ignition switch so when u turn the key on it will be hot untill u turn the key off the the other terminal on ur coil goes the the single wire coming out or ur dist try that and then see if u got fire out of the coil if not u will probly need a new coil
OK power from battery to + side of coil, jumper wire or however. - side of coil to dist. Pull cap crank engine points opening? If so clean them with a bit of sandpaper ,then clean with a piece of biz card don't leave any paper in there. Test for coil, condsener, turn engine so points are open ,put power to coil ,touch a screwdriver across both halfs of the point momentarly. You should get a spark out of the big wire from coil to dist held 1/4 inch away from the engine . OK so far ? now with power still to the coil crank engine with starter still got a spark? Yes ? now add gas and put wire back in cap and cap on. Should run.
Electronic ignition has created a whole generation of folks who have never had to tinker with points.
