I need to ship a cab and front clip from a 54 Chevy truck from Roswell, NM to Rochester, NY. I have a listing on USHIP and have gotten ZERO bids.... best i can find is $2000. Their estimator said $400 and i expected 400-600 for a truck that would otherwise be a partial load headed back east... help? idea/advice?
+1. Bill @ Bill's Auto Works is delivering my T RPU bed tomorrow...had to wait about a month till he was coming this way, but he's called or PM'ed to give me updates every week and the price is right. Click on his profile & send him a PM...
Rent a trailer and make a road trip.... did that last year for my pickup pieces (needed a donor frame and got the cab box and engine/trans thrown in)... so, it was either ship the parts or road trip... The road trip was the best part....up at 2am, hit the road with a bud and a big mug of coffee and haul ***....I might be 50-something, but a road trip for the "cause" is always fun... Tom
^^^^^ X2, Fly out rent a cube van and drive it home. Take photos of the trip, and post them here, we like riding shotgun. Bob
i had a model a coupe body brought from mn to ma for about $650. most freight companies will haul them but they need to be crated. if someone in nm is willing to bring it to a terminal, ive had great luck with yellow freight, now called yrc. they seemed to be the cheapest if you can bring to and pick up at a nearby terminal. you can call their 800 number and get a quote. the problem ive found with uship is when you accept a bid, they take a deposit. if the deal falls through, as happened, they give you your deposit back as a credit towards another shipment. if you dont ship much that could be a problem. you could also call or check online that pods company to see how much. load the box and ship it.
Did you try Fastenal,I don't know what their limits are but I have seen people mention some pretty good size stuff they shipped, pretty cheap.
You must be near New York City. I'm not busting your balls but no shipper wants to go there because it's difficult to grab a back load out. You could always try this guy......
NM to NY for 400-600 GOOD LUCK....I priced a PINTO from Texas to Ohio it was 1500...and it is a DRIVER....I sent my Austin A40 from Ohio to NY, it was 1100.....
if you crate it or palletize it so it can be moved safely by lift truck then any regular freight company will haul it cheap. remember when you give to a commercial shipper they are worried about damage so you need to pack it correctly
Roswell to Rochester is one heck of road trip if you drive straight through like I do until I have to stop and sleep. Just find a roadside park and pull in next to an 18 wheel and put the seat back. I've went from Columbia, MO to Masena, NY as well as from Columbia to Vegas!! Both of them were long hauls. pdq67
Check Craig's list under Services/Labor and Moving and also Community services for both the to and from locations for empty trucks/trailers. I had my heap brought cross county by a guy who bought a load of solar panels to take home and was looking for something to haul out. It was half the price of other options, gas money is better than hauling empty.
If you drive there, you will probably p*** 10 or 20 of those trucks cheaper and in better shape, but what the hell, it would be a good time. Take a buddy and/or a dog (most chicks quit having fun after about 100 miles.) check out neat stuff you have never seen before and do some old car shoppin along the way. You might even come back with more than just a cab and sheetmetal. Good luck, -Abone.
It would have to be crated or secured on a pallet that is slightly larger than the cab and nose. Personally I would want sides of a crate up high enough so that a fork lift driver couldn't push something else up against the cab or nose. The pallet should also be made so it can be picked up from the side or end. If you are the one doing the shipping it isn't all that hard to hunt around and find a large used pallet or skid. I've hauled several large skids home from the freight yard for firewood and one local manufacturing plant regularly sets out large and or odd size pallets for locals to pick up. They set it in the corner of the lot and it's gone in the morning no fees to haul it to the dump. The fees are still going to be according to the size and weight x the distance. I used to receive a hell of a lot of freight in a job I had including crated equipment that came from in Germany in a crate that cleared each side of the freight trailer by two inches and weighed several tons. That crate got hauled home and turned into an 8x12 shed.
make sure whoever you contract with is fully insured and/or bonded. Lots of horror stories of bandit haulers than don't lash the load properly, then lose it in a corner or a wind, and just abandon it and let you go pack sand.
Friend of mine just moved 2300 miles and used Upack,a divison of ABF Freight. He was very happy with the service and the price. They drop a empty trailer at your house and you pack your stuff in the front of it. ABF then picks the trailer up and brings it back to their terminal and loads it the rest of the way with other freight and off it goes...... They reverse the process at the other end and drop the trailer at your destination. Downside is you need some one at the other end to unload it. Upside is they don't touch your cargo at all....just haul it.
Call me I have a friend out that way that comes to warsaw ny a few times a year with a load. Jesse 585 813 7549
Ive used these guys with good success www.freightquote.com will need to pallitize it and unload at a loading dock or have a fork lift
Have you looked where Roswell, NM is ? What are the odds of someone doing a direct haul with no stops or transfers along the route you need hauling done ? A cab is a static load, it can't be moved around easily or strapped down easily, the best way to haul it is an enclosed trailer where it can safely travel. #2 diesel is at an all time sustained record high over the last (6) months, currently the national average is $4.09 a gallon ... @ http://fuelgaugereport.aaa.com/?redirectto=http://fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com/index.asp 80% or more of auto transport is brokered, nearly 100% of brokers lie about transport cost and time frame for delivery. Good point. I got lucky with my privateer hauler, especially when he called to report going through heavy storms over the Rockies, I was sweatin' it until he arrived and wishing I had gone with a pro. On a side note I also learned that IF your vehicle is insured, and IF you have comprehensive coverage, it SHOULD cover trailering by anyone.
No one with actual hauling experience goes anywhere near Denver between October and March .... Few experienced haulers go west of Denver on I-70 even in the good weather months - it is not a trucker friendly route. Jim
I'll fall on the road trip side. Fly-n-drive or drive-n-drive. You'll see alot and come back with more than truck parts.
Exactly. I shipped a T bucket from here to Florida, weight and size were no problem but the shipper wanted it crated. They would not do residential pickup either even though I was quoted residential pickup. They wanted it delivered to their loading dock. I would contact BenD here on the HAMB he makes trips back east I know because he as stopped by my place on a few of them.
Great advice.. still working through messages. sent a PM to Bill.. going to call Fastenal. pallet may be tuff but we'll see. trip- I'd love to but it would be too expensive. after a plane ticket and a 1 way rental i think it would be $2200+ before food or lodging and it would take a few vacation days.. I found a guy that may be able to do it for $600 or so but he's normally full and may not be free till april...
