just finished another frame off hotrod build and some friends that were over for thanksgiving went out to the shop to look. one asked where the radio was. i told him you dont need a radio in a hot rod cause you've got the tune of a set of 3" pipes and the sound of a carb ****ing air and the vibrations of a big block resonating through the whole thing. yeah, i have systems in my every day rides, but you dont need tunes in a hotrod do ya ? any body else have no radio rides or is it just me ?
No radio in my 32, for the reasons you describe. I don't listen to music except in the shop. A radio is going into the 31 on 32 rails roadster though. Sweetie and I drive the 32 quite a bit and it would be nice to tune in a talk show when I'm waiting....
My coupe will have a radio. My plan is an old AM radio in the dash, an FM converter hidden below, and use an FM transmitter on my ipod to play the tunes I want. The old tunes I want, playing out of an old radio, when I want them to. I've already picked up the radio and the old FM converter at a swap meet. We'll see how the setup works. Pete
A few years ago a buddy of mine and I were bemoaning the fact that for the great majority of young folks the car has just become a platform to hang a huge sound system on. So you end up with ****boxes with multi thousand dollar sound systems. I have no problem with tunes in a hot rod. Just don't let the sound gear take away from the car. And your right Trent, the T is too loud for a radio. lol It sounds good all by itself.
over 20 years- no radio in my mustang. cept for the haul to paso or bakersfield. then its portable CD player.
I have enough voices in my head to not need a radio. Seriously.....the car's tune is much better. Roger
No radio in the Dodge..i wouldnt be able to hear it over the engine anyways..i might put one in the 38 but that will depend on the engine noise too..the 38 is supposed to be more of a cruiser but you know how that goes
I put a stereo in my 40 Olds coupe back in the day....it was pointless. I couldn,t hear the damn thing over the motor.Out she came.....
I don't have one in the 33 plymouth, 38 buick, or my bikes. I drive truck and don't turn that on half the time. Gives me time to think of things I got to do. Work problems out. Know what I mean.
I hve one in my 57 Olds and in my 34 Plymouth. In fact, just installed a new one in the 34 that has a connector for I Pod for my wife, plus a usb port for tunes on a flash drive. It also has a cd player in the unit and a 6 disc changer in the rear. Hope to get away from the CD's and just use a couple of 4gb flash drives. Gotta have tunes on long trips and when stuck in traffic gridlock.
No radio in any of my old cars... I've had some with tunes before, and I always stressed I would miss hearing some vital component falling off and dragging down the road... and is there even a single wierdo on here that doesn't like the sound of a V8?
Saw that channeled '32 roadster in the new SR that HR&CS built - it has a vintage radio control on the dash and I LOVE the look - I went and sourced an outfit that visually restores and converts the old ones to AM/FM with options like inputs for CD and mp3. Found a few oldies on eBay and am deciding what to go with - there's an old Motorola that looks cools, has a round face (so it matches the gauges) but I'm leaning toward an old Philco (my last name is Phillips - thought it might be cool) with a vertical dial. I'm going to run one of them in the new '32 sedan with an mp3 input. If I go with the round Motorola I'll turn a new bezel to match the gauges and keep a little continuity. Steve
I always tell the younguns that radios in hotrods have batteries and a carry handle, these days with a c***ette or CD player feature too. You can always hang it on one of the dash knobs.
Really? I had heard that before but never seen any proof. I wonder if that includes ear plugs that protect your ears? It is funny this was mentioned. Hotrodladycrusr and I were just discussing this the other night. Big Olds is soon to have a radio. It will be the the first in her 70,000 miles plus of largely solo driving! I don't know she's done it. This year on the Salt Cured Hamb tour I took my ipod/XM radio (with headphones) with me. I may have died without it. The drone of an engine puts me to sleep. I am probably the only person in the world that gets great sleep trackside at a dragstrip!
