well boys no joy have had the side plate off and physically moved the rail plunger back and kept it back while try with running nothing .. It looks like i am looking for a transmission or at least removing and rebuild .. thanks again for trying Fred
The sprag may be the culprit. Any trans I have worked on will create a neutral somewhere when it fails.
The overdrive lever moves the sun gear in and out of the planet carrier. When you pull out the OD cable you are sliding the sun gear back locking it into splines in the carrier. There is also a rod that is supposed to do this when you shift to reverse. It appears that something in the OD section is not assembled corectly or broken. It it pretty easy to remove the OD section. Make sure you collect all the rollers from the one way clutch as they will fall out. You hold them in position with a rubber band on re-assembly.
He came out of the store and the guy in the Galaxie was waiting for him to move. The guy in the Galaxie told his reverse gear was out. My friend said, well we'll have to push our cars around, my reverse gear is out too Ha Ha, I've done the same thing. An automatic with blown reverse. Drove for years, just had to be careful to park somewhere I knew I could get out forward. Kind of limited parking locations. I think some of the earlier BW overdrives on like studebakers did not have a lockout on the od for reverse.
Could be the lockout rod and fork are tweaked or bent. If you have parked the car in OD turn off and then come back to start, toss in reverse and take off quick, it is possible to not fully engage the mechanism if quickly jumping into reverse and under power. Worn parts don't always line up perfect each time.
