Confirmed tonight that the original fuel line must have a hole (or 50) in it. Blew air through from tank outlet, not clogged. But pump won't pull from tank so. . .
New line to be run tomorrow evening. My favorite- laying on my back on cardboard in the driveway (refuse to own a creeper) and getting pelted with rust scale for an hour or so. Motor runs excellent from a gallon jug through the pump though.

Previous owner or mechanic stripped the carb inlet threads so I need a carburetor.
The threads are MANGLED!! Who the F would do that!?!?!?!?!

  5. Know plenty of people who have done it, because I've seen the after effects. Used to a self-threading fuel inlet nut available; try one of those?

@Algoma56 yup, got one of those and it still sprayed fuel- looked like a porn flick.
Put some pipe dope on it tonight and it stopped leaking for now. On the hunt for a carburetor or carb top. New fuel line plumbed and. . . . Fuel pump is not making the grade, just dribbling so that'll be the next purchase

  7. Parts stores used to have those inlet repair kits right out on the counter. I'm sure some older parts stores may have some stashed away.

@bobss396 I grabbed one of those from a local carburetor repair guy. Installed it carefully and it still sprayed fuel, damn.
I pulled it apart again and put plumbing pipe dope on it and so far that is working

So new fuel line run back to front, new hoses front and back, new fuel pump too.
Still won't pull fuel from the tank. Gallon of gas under the tank works fine. Ross says "we should have pulled the sender out when you had the tank out".
I HATE doing shit twice- especially nasty, on my back shit. After work today I pulled it out, the sock was gummed up with old gas. I meticulously cleaned it with brake cleaner and put it all back together. Viola! The Cat-alina runs mint from the tank now.

  12. Excellent! too bad you had to do it but you got it running. Great choice getting on to the brakes before deciding on driving it.;)

Ducked out of work a little early and slid under the Pontiac. Exhaust all fell off either on the way home or in the driveway. Y pipe broke off at main pipe, muffler fell off on Ross's head the other nnight.I am cheap so i went into the stash in the hideout, I have chunks of cut off pipes from old projects so I patched it all together except the muffler. Going online to find one now and soon it'll be quiet. Neighbors will be happy.

Been fooling with the brake system, had to replace front left hose and brake line.
Also tapped out some dings on the stainless trim pieces for the hood 20240827_154600.jpg 20240827_154604.jpg 20240827_154613.jpg 20240827_162145.jpg 20240827_162148.jpg 20240827_162151.jpg

I asked around about a booster and master cylinder. Howie from the club said come on over I have some. . . . We'll, looks like we might be driving this soon. Fabricated the clevis, hogged out the holes on the firewall and bam!! Fits pretty good! 20241102_171950.jpg

Booster is 22years too new for the HAMB and it required metric hardware. Had to go to Aubuchon for that. Pedal throw is good and it shot brake fluid onto the fenderwell so hopefully it'll work. Need a couple lines and a brass tee to see

Got the brake lines plumbed and master filled. Pedal is eeehhh pretty good. Seems like a good idea for the first test drive

20241129_145425.jpg 20241129_152538.jpg Firm shifts, brakes need more bleeding but it stops, handles well, one finger steering, plenty of power, no leaks. Couldn't be happier

You could do a lot worse for the cost of admission… very cool. Are you going to drive it during the winter?

@oldsmobum this car would be so fun doing donuts in the snow. I noticed the heater works too. We'll see. . .

    Hmmph... :D ;
It's a hardtop, & a moredoor at that. You *win*, you're golden! Yah, I'd drive that, too. Wife has good taste.
As far as the carb inlet; since it's more or less "junk" now, I'd grab some of the "aluminum welding sticks" & fill the thread area, then drill it out, & tap it. They do work if you don't over-heat the base metal.& clean it extra-well w/*non*-chlorinated brake cleaner, after cleaning it w/your favorite de-gunker. Worst case scenario, you're no better off than you are now.

    Awesome.
    I love old Pontiacs.

Maybe try some CLR on that fender?

I love it, although I'd be dying to attack that paint. You'd have a lot of scrubbing and a few pretty big paint blends, but I wonder how far a guy could go without repainting the whole car.

Doing the mechanicals first like you're doing makes way more sense though. Too many cheapie/free projects never make it to the road again, this one is already a win.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's been a fun project because 1- it actually runs good
2- it's not all rotted out 3- it'll melt the right rear tire off!
@Just Gary 3 of 4 wheel covers are original- 1 is 50s Oldsmobile.
@Squablow definitely needed to get mechanicals going first, this way if it was junk I'd part it out. She wants dark blue paint so that’s going to be a big job
