Where are all the Harley guys? All you have to do is lock out the mechanical advancer, and with a timing tape, or timing marks scribed on your pulley/damper, now hook up a buzz-box or a simple test light and set full advance timing. This has been done for decades and is quite accurate if you take your time. The K.I.S.S. principle in action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone here should be able to lock out thier advance unit to do this properly. TR
Unfortunately, some things we think are common sit on the average parts stores shelves unsold for long periods of time. I don't care how common something may have been 10-20 years ago, if it sits on the shelf for 2 or more years unsold, it will probably either be returned to the supplier or not replaced when it is finally sold. Any business that is in business to make money and create jobs and return on investment is going to think this way. If they don't, their business is probably also their hobby.
Any item sitting on a shop shelf in subject to what is known as "Stock turn",this means if you have a 10% markup you must move it on in one month, six months 100% or you are better off leaving your $ in the bank as it will make you more money. How much would you pay for the item you want when its been there two years? It doest help us any but thats why its called business not friends.JW
My wife has her eyes on a 2001 Ford Expedition a buddy wants her to buy, but I'm trying to persuade her I know nothing about computers and circuits and integrated logic and all that.... If it breaks, it'll never get fixed.
Brand: KD Tools Advance Auto Parts Part#: 22988142 $2.79 Ignition File by KD Tools (part#KDT2153) / Other Specialty Tools Use tool to file ignition and other small objects The thin blade has a fine grid on both sides and is ideal for removing carbon from points
You wouldn't use this tool for your car distributor LOL, just the same principle. Best to have a friend handy and hold the rotor to lock out the advance, and someone to turn the distributor and look for the light or the buzz to indicate advance marks corresponding with ignition firing. I have never tried this with a HEI, but any automotive points ignition set up would be a piece of cake, TR
Don't mean ,or intend to hi-jack here, but whats better to buy,a regular timing light ,or a dial-back style I have both & don't use either ha ha
Couldn't find it at local parts stores - then found two in my tool box. See what happens when you don't use a tool for years.... forget you have it...
So are you clocked in at work and bored or are you trying to get promoted to head of advertising for Advanced Auto Parts?
Good counter persons are out there indeed! I even started a tread about them a while back. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=726244
Go to SEARS, my local store carries them, Actron brand I think. Unless you live in a total **** hole of a town they should have it.
I do NOT need it. I used a friends. This thread is about the seemingly lack of tools for older cars. That's it. I know where to get a timing gun. Really, I do.
Actually, people who DON'T read a post are what's scarey. "wrench with the little off set, so it could clear the intake manifold when you go to loosen the distributer bolt..." You also ignored where I usually set timing by ear. If you're going to be a smart ***, read the thread first.
I don't think you actually get an open/closed circuit sort of thing on an HEI. It relies on a magnet flying past a coil at speed. Turning by hand doesn't generate the same switching signal. I may be wrong though. I guess it is on the cusp of moving into the black art of electronics and stuff like that.
For that price I'd fire up my gas torch and welder and take ten minutes out to modify an old wrench out of my tool chest.
Read the thread. I'm still surprised you don't own either. Not being a smart ***, just seems odd that you could even set timing by ear and not have the offset box wrench.
