You can do this until a cop pulls you over and wants to see the serial number on the vehicle. And when your registration doesn't match the numbers on the car, it'll get impounded. The other issue is insurance. Suppose that after an accident (and a claim) that the appraiser knows what he's doing, locates the number on the frame, car shell, etc., and it doesn't match the registration? I think you'll find the claim will be denied because the car insured and the car you are driving are two different things.

There are legal ways to get a car titled. I never understood why someone would commit title fraud.

All I have is a Model A body, frame with a serial number on it and and a bill of sale from someone I probably couldnt track down. Is it possible to get a bonded title for this type of vehicle? To apply for a bonded title how would it be possible to fill out those forms completly and accurately? There would be alot of missing info on those forms (license plate no., abondoned, junked, leins, sellers info and signature, etc. etc.?)

Any advice? Should I just walk into the DMV with what I have and tell them I need to get a bonded title, or is this going to open a can of worms?

I used Broadway for a lost title about 10 years ago. I lived in Philly at the time and after I got the notarized bill of sale from Broadway, the first place I went to told me what I was doing was illegal. Then I went to another place in a worse part of town that did titles (and i think bail bonds) and got it done. After that, I had no problems with it, and even transferred that title to Arizona in 2001. The truck is long gone.

Each state is different, and it comes down to who you're dealing with at the DMV. I've gone in there lots of times thinking I would have a hassle, and then ended up walking out with a title in disbelief.

Also, I agree with the suggestion a few posts back about doing a title only at first, then doing the registration separate.

I have been readin every title/registration thread I can find and I haven't seen antone with my situation. I bought a 49 chevy with a title recently. It had no motor/tranny. When I got it home I was looking for the vin plate and found the body plate on the firewall but the vin plate on the a-pillar was gone. What do I do. Can you get a blank vin plate and stamp the vin in? I didn't mean to hijack the thread but I don't wanna post a new one just for everybody to tell me to do a search.

    Thanks,

    T.

Scott, if I were you I would go to the DMV and get ALL the required forms, take it ALL home and fill everything out the best you can. If you have areas you can't fill out, call the DMV and ask if the info is really required. An old plate number, for example, is asked for on the forms I fill out in Utah but is not really required information...

    ...Just to recap

If it's your first time doing this, I wouldn't fill anything out at the DMV. Take your forms home, make phone calls to the DMV for any questions, get all your poop in a group, then go back with everything they require you to have.

I used Broadway and felt it was a waste of money. What they did was send me a copy of some court file from Alabama stating that titles weren't issued to historical vehicles in Alabama. Then, they used the info I provided them to issue me a bogus bill of sale from Alabama. I took that to my DMV and lo and beyold they gave me a title! Cost me $125. So that is how they do it. Why can't you just duplicate the process? At least you will have a title matching the VIN. Ultimately, that is the most important thing.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but why? You ended up with a title, no? I'm not defending them, and I've never used them - but you basically paid them for the know-how and paperwork. I've seen people pay a lot more for papers.

You can if you have a contact who resides in Alabama - all you need is any kind of bill of sale, even a note on a scrap of paper. To my knowledge nothing (vin, etc) ever gets verified. Basically, on paper you sold Broadway your vehicle, and they sold it back to you. They can obtain a title while they 'own' it because they're residents of AL.

Boats are done that way here in TN, but they've really tightened up on car titles the last couple of years - it's tough.

I bought a 56 chevy and the guy forgot to send the title with the shipper. Needless to say I cant get a hold of the guy, anway I live in Ohio and they do not accept broadway title. Does anyone know if International title co. would work? I called the d.m.v. to see what I could do through the proper channels and they said "no title your outta luck". any tips for getting a title in the lovely state of Ohio?

Then you should tell everyone, so threads like this one won't be needed.

But in the last paragraph of your post in this thread (post#43), you kinda answered why people do what they have to do.
