I am not sure if this normal but on my 56 chevy truck that has a later model chevy front end . When i turn all the way to left or right there is a sqreeching noise .Fluid is full and its not the belt .I asked a few people and they said thats normal for early power steering units .Its a standard saginaw unit .Other then that it works fine and its only when turned fully to hit bump stops .

try not to take it against the bumpstops , what your hearing is probably the pressure relief valve opening in the pump and its not good to do that as it means your applying too much pressure to the steering mechanism

Normal when turning the steering wheel from full lock to lock. Many decades ago, when I learned to drive, my Dad told me it is not good to cause the power steering pump to do that when it sounds like a squealing pig getting boinked.
