I have a Ford 8 “ rear end … I think it is a late model with the extra ribbed housing (WCZ-V1). It has a rubbing noise like when you have a bent bicycle wheel and it hits the fork (a rub a rub a rub … you get it). It does it under load, but not when I put the trans in neutral. Tapping the brakes makes no difference. Drums look good and shoes look new. I have pulled the third member and ring gear looks good and unit looks like it might be rebuilt. Does this make sense? What do you think it might be? Help?
Jack up the rear end, tie the car so it can not get away if it falls down and run the the drive train and carefully see/listen for the noise it may actually not be in the rear end but that will be determined during the inspection. Other choice is to put it on a hoist and do the same inspection. Good luck
I have had the same problem. Look at the backing plate where it meets the recess in the drum. Sometimes if the plate is bent or if the drum is not true, they will rub without squeeking.
have the axles been put in the housing from another rear.they may be too long and the end of the axle is riding against the spider gear pins.
while it was apart, did you put a dial indicator on the back of the ring gear to see if the differential has runout?
What gear ratio is it? I had 4.11's in my Fairlane, and they were set up right, but, they had a cyclic humming under a load. I thought maybe they were not set up properly, and we went and replaced the dif. and gearset with another 4.11 set, and an Auburn posi...it did the same thing. I also was told by a friend that Richmond ( the brand of the gearset in my rear) had been having probs. at the time with noisy gearsets, even when installed properly. I seem to remember that the 8" rear was prone to being noisy with these higher numeric ratios. ??? just some thoughts...
