  2. Another noob ?????
First early sbc assembly. Put the heads together tonight. Noticed the valve retainers are different. Has 3 different styles
Old style with the cups. Internets wasn’t much help. Or I asked the question wrong. All the info was the non cup style if there's any difference.
bout to go to bed so no pics
    Big deal?

not sure what you mean...they used rotators on the exhaust valves on a lot of them starting in the 70s. They all originally had the cup around the valve spring, which acts as an umbrella to keep oil out of the guide, the O ring between the valve stem and retainer completes the seal.

  4. I’ll post a pic in the morning.
I’ve got another set of heads to look at as well.
I bagged each valve assembly separately when I took it apart. Didn’t notice the retainers looked different until tonight.

  5. Speaking of cannisters; anyone know how to get the bolt out?

Pretty sure I read about it in post here at sometime in the past; but can't remember.

Seems to me you always got the copper encased gasket for the bolt in sbc gasket sets.

I have one that I really wanted to get plated at on time, not so much now; but still curious.

@anthony myrick if you can't find a can; I have extra you can have for shipping cost.

the corvette restoration guys know all about getting the bolt out, etc. I gave up on getting things nice looking, so I've never had to remove one. There's a funky washer thing down inside there that retains the bolt, it's tricky.

do a google search about it, and look for threads from Corvette Forum

Rich, the lower filter seat is retained to the mounting bolt either by a swedge or a snap ring. The swedge seems most common. If swedged you a relegated to the gently application of a brass hammer. I have not yet come up with a nice way to re-create the swedge, but have taken apart a number of bad examples. When I get a swedged assembly apart the bolt get put in the lathe to cut a snap ring groove.

Probably just design or supplier changes over the years....

then sort them all out, and put one design on the intakes, and another on the exhausts :)

  11. I might do that

Ive got a pile of older sbc head pieces stashed so I’ll make em all match.
My machinist said some of those were the later style. It slightly affects spring height.
The heads were probably assembled by a production engine builder at one time using whatever pieces were close.

You'll feel better getting matched retainers. And yes, there is a slight variation in spring height with different style retainers. But after you get the valves seated you will be using shims to equalize the installed height. Usually the valve work will be the bigger variable.

I get that. While taking the valve keepers off your extra heads you'll free up some valve springs. Measure the free length of your spring collection and find 16 that are fairly close to go with your matched keepers.

    I bought new “z28” springs.

There are adapters that use Ford style or Chevy the Ford style uses the bypass in the filter and gives you more choice in filter sizes.

I love that camshaft!! Just enough to wake up the engine and not very expensive either!!! It has the exact same specifications as the Edelbrock Performer cam at 1/3 the price. I strongly suspect Melling made the camshaft for Edelbrock. I used a Melling MTF 5 in a 351 Ford once and had the same, great results.
