Hello, I am new to the site, and this weekend I plan on traveling from PHX to San Francisco to pick up, and drive my new old car home. It's a 51 lincoln cosmo with the original 337 flathead and a GM hydro-matic 4 speed OD trans. The owner states that It has only a few minor problems, and little to no rust (We'll see). Does anyone know about the reliability of these 337's? Any suggestions on what to bring along in my tool box? Also, the owner states that the temp guage is broken. is there any aftermarket 6v temp guages i could rig up for the drive? Thanks, Nick.
I know one thing. Don't drive it without a temp gauge or you'll be walkin. As far as what to bring: extra fuel pump, belts. hose, clamps and a AAA plus card. Good luck- stick
Hook up a mechanical temp gauge and bring it out at the back of the hood, to the base of the windshield. I don't like it when the temp gauge is broken. Look and see if it is disconnected. There should be a wire going to a bulb in each head. If it'll get you around town in traffic for an hour you should have a pleasant trip home. These were great old road cars.
Thanks for the advice guys, my plan was to pick up a mechanical temp gauge, and just use some double sided tape to attatch it to the dash for the drive. Where do you fellas think i can find a spare fuel pump? as far as belts and hoses and the like, I am going to fill the trunk with this sort of stuff, and maybe a few quarts of oil, and a gallon of coolant. I plan on taking a lot of pictures on the drive, mostly desert scenery, but is is going to be between 58-78 all weekend where I am going, so it should be nice. Also, the owner commented about how he takes the car from SF to Yosemite frequently, and that it is a great cruiser.
If it's like a Ford you might need two temp guages; one for each bank. If you pass near Sacramento,Vintage Ford might provide you with the other items that you might need.

Well here's the site but they don't list anything for a Lincoln. Sorry man; I thought they did. http://www.vintageford.com/word_search.cfm?line=1952-56&DescEntry=lincoln&Category=
still ford stuff, the only thing that makes me nervous about this car is the lack of availability of the water pumps for the 337. Does anyone know what the engine code is for a 337?
Hey try tractor supply for a temporary gauge. Ford tractors were 6v and they sell variouse parts. You might luck out and find a cheap 6v gauge. You only need 2 temp gauge sif you dont have the right sending unit and a jumper to the other gauge.
