Technical NOS Eelco tri power linkage . Modify or sell?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Mar 25, 2025.

  1. Picked up a NOS Eelco lincage set up. Box had Rochester written on the box. The Elco paperwork said progressive.
    Here’s what it came with
    IMG_5436.jpeg
has the rod to be set up progressive but not a piece like this
    IMG_5437.jpeg

  2. This needs drilled to fit the extended Rochester throttle rod

Agreed. I got a nice NOS Ansen shifter kit from r&c from @scoob_daddy

I’m with mad mikey, modify it and make it your own.

Why sell it? It looks correct for your build if that matters. You only need a few small parts to get it working. You could buy something different and still need a few small things to get it correct for what you need. If you do decide to sell it, just make your own. Just get some carb arms, fittings, rod ends, and some rod material and go for it. When you write the narrative for your photo shoot the "built by owner" sounds good!

Chop it up and modify it as needed.

The old "they ain't making this stuff anymore" is a pile of crap. Guys are still chopping pristine old cars that "they ain't making anymore" without concerns.

This is just carb linkage. Some body still has a bunch of this stuff laying around, if some one feels the need to own OEM aftermarket stuff. Modify it and use it up.

  16. That’s the plan.

I’ll preserve the box and paperwork.
Shorten the shaft between the main carbs about 3/8.
Drill out the main carb lever
    Add this
    IMG_5442.jpeg
    should hook it up.

I’ll admit I kinda hated opening it up. But it’s not doing any good just sitting in the box.

Do what you gotta to use it. It isn't going to do a bit of good sitting in a box looking pretty. I buy and use nos stuff whenever I can

It's not like it's a Duesenberg part, use that stuff. The pride of ownership coupled with actual use? That's the line I'd be in. But if you don't show us the finished product yer just a dick. Wait, that might actually be a compliment.

We’ll see how they work out when completed.

vintage speed provided the necessary pieces to complete. Less than $20 shipped.

Are you going to use a hand choke on the center carb, or convert it to an electric choke? Or back to the exhaust heat operated choke?

Now that it is installed, just check the function until there is no jamming. (from zero to 100% full.)

    Hello,

When we finished the 6 Strombergs on our SBC motor, we had a functioning progressive linkage purchased from Reath Automotive. It allowed us to drive the 40 Willys Coupe on the streets on our practice cruise and then later on more miles on the street before heading to the dragstrip. The progressive linkage worked great. Just enough power from the center carbs and then a big outburst from the outer 4 carbs when the pedal was pushed deeper.

At the time it ran great and we were ready to make some runs at Lion’s Dragstrip. Many months later, we still used a new progressive linkage set up when we moved the 6 carbs on a different manifold on top of our 671 supercharger. That too worked great and allowed us to drive on the streets for our “warm up” cruise prior to going to the dragstrip. The power of the outer carbs was instant and nice to know it was there.

Then after our dragstrip adventures, I was the driver and owner of a 58 black Impala, since my brother was in his accident recovery and wanted to move to surf vans and smaller daily drivers. So, I drove the 58 Impala that was now modified and faster. I bought a new progressive linkage for the three carbs after a mishap with the stock vacuum hose falling off during a race. The outer two carbs never kicked in and I could feel it topping out using only the center two barrel carb.

So, we installed a progressive linkage on the three carbs. It worked fine as we pulled the linkage back and forth to make sure all connections were running smoothly and no kinks in the system. So, for a week, the progressive linkage was adjusted and it ran fine. But, one night after dropping off my friend at his house, he wanted to hear my Impala with open exhaust cut outs and a full acceleration run down the street from his house in the late night. Teenage exploits make interesting challenges.
    upload_2025-4-10_4-25-15.png
The open exhaust outlets made a nice sound and when I put the full throttle action, the carbs all kicked in instantly and I took off down the street. Later in the week another friend who lived on the next street over heard the sound and thought it was us messing around. Well, it was me. As I whisked toward the end of the major street a block down the road, I let off in plenty of time to stop safely.

But, the Impala still kept going. Now, I was in a panic and stomped on the brakes. Slowing down somewhat I could see the cross street and impending doom. I kept fiddling with the gas pedal and finally, after skidding for about 50 feet in a total panic mode, I skidded out into the first lane and luckily, it shut down and no cars were in that lane.

Come to find out, the full throttle caused the progressive linkage to stick as I floored the whole set up. After jiggling the pedal and braking at the same time, it went back to normal. I could not understand why it did that, as we always move the linkage far forward and back to make sure it functioned as it should. I may have gone as far as I thought was the end or full throttle, but did not give it much thought at the time. So, the foot to the floor may have pushed it beyond 100%.

Obviously, it needed more adjustments on the complete full throttle position and return. Duh!!! No more progressive linkage. I added a hose clamp to the vacuum tube and that solved any future full acceleration runs for the rest of the teenage ownership time period. No more progressive linkages… YRMV Just check the normal usage parameters and also the full 100% throttle position to be safe.

  24. Center carb has a stove pipe choke.
I’m not sure how I’ll do it yet. I am running 55/56 exhaust manifolds so I could do it either way

You're asking people who cut up and modify entire cars whether it's ok to modify a carb linkage? Too funny! :D

  26. It’s kind of a “I took it out of the box and it doesn’t fit” reference
I guess modifying new aftermarket stuff is more traditional than I thought it was:)

I’ll ad it I was a tad apprehensive on opening the box but that momentary lapse of insanity passed quickly.

I just installed those on my car, but won’t be able to start it for another week.

I found that under foot the spring tension is really not bad at all- just enough to be noticeable. I used the vintage speed linkage, and he says the secondaries start to open around 60%… But I’ll be damned if it doesn’t feel like only the last 10% of the pedal stroke. It will be very deliberate to open the secondaries up.
