Well she fired up without too much trouble, the only reason it didn't fire on the first start is because i forgot to put the choke on!!

ahhh the sound of a sbc the universal language....how many times over the years have a group of guys huddled around a new motor waiting for the fist time it fires. Esp the guy who built/installed it, it is a special feeling.

    great job

Wow, this is turning out to be a REALLY nice car! Keep it up!

  14. You own my favorite car ever...I could even look past the engine problem in the beginning if I had my name on the paper-work. Besides, 2bbl 265's used to blow the doors off of full-house flat-heads.
    Looks great!

Great thread, thumbs up from Downunder

  17. Jamesville, Thanks for this thread... I learned lots.... I just have a couple questions.... Why did you have to put an adapter on the torque tube? Whats the benifit of lincoln gears? Why not run a modern tranny? Have a few more but maybe I should PM... I'm doing something simmilar and Im new at all of this.. Any threads that you found helpful on your journey would also be apreciated whether it be clutch, brakes or whatever... thanks...

    hi Lowcoe,

    so to answer your questions,

the adapter is on the back of the engine in front of the tranny not the torque tube. its a stock set up from the tranny backwards.

the benifit of lincoln gears is when you have more power, as 1st and 2nd gears are a little longer. but really i just did it because it is cool, not very smart financial.

i did not run a modern tranny because in denmark i am not allowed to (i should not even be changing the engine). and also i would then want to change everything else behind the tranny, rear end etc and that would of been too expensive. and last because i am build a late 50's style hot rod.

to many good threads to list, ask me question and i can tell you what i have learnt.

  19. Had to think about that answer for about a week... I guess you misunderstood. I wasnt talking about the engine adapter i was talking about the picture on page 7 where you said

"The torque tube has had the new six spine adapter welded up for the new pinion, its the last big job i have to do is re-build the rear end."

Thats where I lost you. Your changing the rear end right? this has nothing to do with adapting the 283 to the stock transmission.

oh ok, no i am putting in 3:54 gears replacing the original 4:11.

but the new pinion (the thing sticking out of the rearend) has six teeth but the original had 10. so you need to cut and weld a new one on the end of the torque tube.

Truth. I ended up just taking a '39 rear and replacing the '35 that I had in it. That way there was no cutting or welding...proving once again that there are many ways to skin a cat.

So i have taken a break from the car for a while, it all gets a bit much sometimes. you just need a rest from all the troubles and i had a big one a ahead of me. it was the body!!!!!

the biggest problem is the floor, in mexico when they were replacing it they decided it was too much trouble to remove the original one. so they just put one on top of it. so i had to cut through layers of shit work, i never understand that when doing a job why would you not just do it RIGHT!!

    Floors look real good.

It's NO FUN correcting inferior work. I probably drilled out 300 pop rivets and removed 4 or 5 aluminum panels and 4 or 5 Florida license plates attached to the top of my original floors.

Excellent build..... making a silk purse from a sow's ear.... as my mother used to say. Fantastic skills you have there. I still don't understand how you have a workshop inside of a parking garage.

Why are you puzzled that my workshop is in a parking garage???

Well it's right downtown, in the middle of the city. Does it make sense now?

That gives me an idea for a thread 'workshops in strange places'

So to me this is when the fun starts, no more cleaning rusty or greasy parts. the summer is just around the corner so the race is on to see if i can get it driving for at least one event.

I had to bend the spindle steering arms this week which was very scary and i have this bad feeling, i have no idea if i did it correctly but its done now, its too late. it seems like it works which is a good thing.

collecting my frame was fun in my new truck, i had to drive right across town with it sticking 10 ft in the air, watching out for low bridges.
