After moving into a two car garage I dont seem to have room for all my toys. Im looking for ways to save space, shelves, cabinets, workbench, ect.Any ideals will be of great help,...PLEASE HELP SAVE MY TOYS
X2 That site is great. I just put up about 120 square foot of peg board for tools and built a 12'X12' shed (wood)for parts and that made tons of space. Got a 50 Ford Tudor and 30 Tudor with tons of room for my welder, plasma, drill press, compressor etc. etc...
For most of your stuff, look at ways to store it overhead. For your big block Chevy stuff, pm me for a shipping address.
I found that building a big shed fits my snowblower, lawn tractor and bunches of things i don't regularly use. Biggest problem i had was i kept things that i used once a year in my 2 car garage and it cluttered up quickly. I put tons of rarely use tools (cam bearing installer, chop saw, etc) in the shed. As for shelving, get the kind that screws to the wall, so you don't crowd your floor space. I started with a small one car garage, and i am finding out that the bigger you go, the more **** you put in it!
we have two shops here they around 80x100 and still don't have enough room. but my dad use to work out of a 1 car garage and have all his stuff in there. But he's collected a lot more since then. I would build shelfs to the ceiling on one wall. then hang stuff high, so it's not on the floor in the way.....Jones
My favorite trick is maximizing shelf space. I have blue plastic totes I got from Sam's several years ago for $4 each (bought $120-worth to move from Fla to Ga). I put a lot of stuff in them. I bought some pallet racking to put along the back wall of my shop, but any shelves will work. The first shelf is far enough off the floor to stash engines on dollies, or stack two of those boxes. The next shelf is tall enough to stack one box, and with no wasted space between the box and the next shelf. I also store transmissions on this shelf. The third shelf is tall enough to store valve covers and intake manifolds, and exhaust manifolds. You very often throw these on a shelf, and don't put anything on top of them. If you have a head sitting on a shelf, and then it's 12 inches to the shelf above it, you've wasted a lot of space. Typically, by maximizing shelves like that, you can get at least one more storage shelf on that unit. Depending on how big the shelf is, that's a lot of extra "found" storage. I also put wire closet shelves along the upper perimeter of the garage, about a foot down from the ceiling, braced/anchored every 12 inches. You can stash a LOT of stuff there. Finally, lots of pegboard to hang things on. -Brad And as a lot of guys have said, a storage shed in the back yard will be a big help too.
I feel your pain.. and as said above..us car nuts never have enough room My 2 car Garage is chock full, and so is my 1000SF shop. i try to find was to squirrel things away in places, and the shed Idea for the other un-related **** is a good step in the right direction too.
Just do what I did...I rent a 1400 foot shop with a 300 sq foot loft space for storage! Keeps the mess away from the house and gives me somewhere to get away!
Never enough room, and today I went to a swap meet lookin for more stuff I must be addicted to HOT RODS.... Somebody HELP!!!!......Oh well never mind.
Bob............About a year ago, we bought a place with a 24x36 garage w/10' walls, and a loft over the last 12 feet. I don't know how high your walls are, but that is the damnest deal for storage. I am in the process of putting an electric winch in so I don't get a hernia lifting things up. Man. this is the cat's whiskers. If you'd like pics for some ideas, pm me w/your email addy and I'll take some..............
