I placed mine in a 20 ton press, put a bunch of pressure on it, then heated it up. When it broke loose it sounded like a gun shot and scared the **** out of me...lol

At least I expected it the second time!

  2. I thought that axle looked weird. Initially I was thinking the pullers were making it look wrong. It is a large truck axle.

Do you think he knows that yet? Hope he didn't pat too much for that axle!!!

I hope this doesn't come off as spam but I have a pair of NOS kingpins I'd let go super cheap for that axle if you're gonna using it. They have a larger diameter than the smaller car/truck stuff. PM me...

So an update on the perches. I found a shop to press them out but in the meantime I cut off the wishbones that were hacked and re-welded at some point, so it would fit in the press. So I tried a piece of **** harbor fright 6 ton press and it popped one out after a lot of coaxing. Of co**** the press broke before I got the other one out. Then the shop said they couldn't do it etc., etc.

Remember this thread the next time you see an axle WITHOUT perches at a swap meet for around $50.00. Bob

This axle came on my '37 1/2 ton. The bones on it were ruined so all I wanted was to replace them. Silly me! Looking for a set if anyone has some. Oh, and by the way, I'd prefer a set NOT attached to an axle! (lol) . And yes, I thought it was a huge axle. Aprox. 50 1/4" pin to pin

so I see from some posts on the thread that I have an oddball axle. didn't know. I am interested in the kingpins you have. What other problems will I have because of this axle? because of my health, this could be the only shot I have building a ride for my 15 year old son, and I can't afford to do it twice, time or money wise. should I bail on the axle? I really don't want to take my chances @ the goodguys. probably just find another one worse then this.

  12. Is there a tech tip on this? I have one out of the 34 that is a bit damaged on the end.

Yes I saw someone here do it
I use a Die that I broke in half….put it on the treads behind the damage and cut the bad away.
On ones that are mushroomed bad I sand some off on the belt sander before trying to re cut the threads.

  14. Too late now, but I got mine out by lots of WD40 and sticking a rod thru the spring bolt hole in the perch and turning back and forth, reasonably easy.

Update!: O.K., I said I wouldn't give up but... I am changing paths, thanks to some members that let me know this was a later axle to a bigger truck with bigger kingpins, etc. would probably cause me grief later for parts. good thing I put all that time into it. Well, I did learn some things, like humility.

So I just wanted to say thanks to all that posted and gave me suggestions, encouragement, and experience. I would have sunk good money into parts that wouldn't have worked out, been discouraged, put a tarp over it, and sat around thinking why didn't I just buy a Harley. It's tough getting back into building, after 10 years, with a ride that's unfamiliar, back in an area after so long where most of my car friends have moved on or diapered.
I'm building this for my 15 year old for his first ride. He wanted a jap car a while back, and I thought I needed to get him into a rod before I lost him to the dark side.
As a single dad with three boys at home , it's not always easy. This has brought us all closer and sparked their interest again. Thank you!
If I haven't answered your replies, it's not because I wasn't interested, or didn't value your input, it's that it's time to cook dinner, drive the kids to the gym, pick up a kid, break up a fight, bandage up another finger from a grinding mishap etc., etc.
So I just wanted to take a second and say thanks!
