Im not trying to knock this truck, it took a lot of work to do it. I think everyone can agree the door handles are unconventional, there may be a reason, like a not-tall person, or a person with arms growing out of their hips, but I suspect it was to avoid making a latch system.
I commend the builder with completing it into a driving fnished vehicle.

If one was so inclined to begin a project like this, that requires an extensive amount of time and effort to complete. Forethought on the proportions will pay off. Trying to create a visual appealing version of a vehicle that "should not have been" is challenging. After all the work it would be nice to have something that looks like it "might have been", instead of chop 2 in half and stick them together.

I'm guessing door handles are lowered for solenoid kickers and electric window clearances.

  3. Ray,everyone is entitled to their own opinion and when you have a open forum you will always get positive and genitive comments.

I, can appreciate the work & talent that it took to build the truck in question but IMHO the builder deviated from the design of stretching a early pickup and then using late model door handles .almost like a after thought and it's like he though, hey, wouldn't it be cool if the door handles were mounted in the bottom of the door.

The hamb has lost some of it's soul when we can't agree to disagree. HRP

HRP Is this the project that came out of California. Had a friend that built one back in the 90's but damn with my shot memory I can't remember his name. He was a camera operator out of CBS, and remember he moved back "East". Still I like the proportions with this one.

    Danny,

You missed my point. I know we all have opinions, Lord knows I have mine and am not bashful about sharing them. I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of the many who complain when an unfavorable opinion is directed their way, but do not give it a second thought to do the same to others. Fact is, I agree with many of the opinions that the conversion doesn't have most flattering lines. So, comment away on this or any other, just stop carping when it happens to you. ('you' meaning anyone to whom it applies, not you personally, Danny).

edit: if any of you catch me in a double standard situation....flame away...I'd want to know I slipped up.

Well the devil is in the details. That usually makes or breaks a build and I'd imagine that the builder felt he had a good reason to put the door handles down there where they are. They somewhat look like Kenworth or Freightliner door handles and it may be there to use the linkage that is designed for them and the latches and that linkage mounts the handle real close to the latch..
After looking at it a bit the back doors are just front doors with the front corner of the window frame replaced. something that is common on crew cab conversions on Chevy AD trucks The extra length between the doors although looking a but clumsy in comparison to that Ford gives the rear seat passengers some actual leg room.

I like oddball trucks. Not to turn this into a crew cab thread (one probably already exists), but here are a few examples in proportions that have been tried over the years.

There was a gent (body shop owner) down Visalia way in '84, built a '57 Ranchero/ranch wagon conversion.
Looked absolutely factory, frame was stretched the 'extra door' amount, every piece on that vehicle was factory origin.
Looked better than a Superior-bodied Cadillac flower car! (I just love those...)

Here's one that a friend of mine & fellow HAMBer (RayMay) did from a '37 Chevy 1/2T I sold him several years back. Great proportions and look good, IMO

Barnfind, thanks for posing those. All of them are cool. That second pic is really good - even has factory shaved handles :)

  12. Amazing piece of work and I make no critical calls on any of the build. I decided long ago that most other builds have some features that I wouldn't do, but have decided if I can't build one myself to be as I choose, I like the way this one is. Hats off to this very interesting and out of the box thinking build. Salute'

I think it's a three-door. That was fairly common among the vintage aftermarket conversions. Some of the early ones had the hand built doors and door post made out of wood.

Maybe it is owned and built by gorillas. Their arms hang low.

Cool build. I like the concept.

The dwarf said "I'm not happy."

I said "Which one are you?"

    Then the fight started.
