that hurts, ray, even if i never knew any of the folks involved. i'm really sorry to hear of this. please tell your granddaughter (and remember your own self) that thousands of folks all around the world have read about her (your) loss and send their sympathy and prayers.

    My god that's a tragedy.

I honestly pray that some miracles happen with these kids and they heal or pass quickly. Both for their sakes and those of their families.

This stuff pisses me off to no end. Not only was he driving too safe but he was on a cell phone and drunk.

I wish more people wore their seatbelts. We'd probably have a bunch of injured and scared shitless kids...but alive. Instead we have what we have. It's a tragedy.

The sad but justifiable part of all of this is that even though the driver lived and was uninjured, he will face jail time and a life of guilt. Both justified. Both sad.

Either put the bottle down or give the keys to someone else.

Ya know, I read this thread when it was only a few posts long. I printed it out (at somebody's advice) and set it aside for my lil brother who's already had a dui and is ALWAYS drinking and driving........I got a call last night to pull him out of a bar, he was too drunk and violent, so I went home. At 2 this morning, CHP called and said come get his truck or we send it to impound. I walked the block to where the truck and cruiser were sitting. In the backseat was my baby brother, twice the limit and beligerent as hell. I drove his truck home, took this post and DUCT TAPED IT TO HIS WINDSHIELD.......when and if he gets out Thursday, I'm gonna continue to tape one on for the rest of his pathetic life!

***SO sorry for the loss of limb and life***

Same story with my sister(s), brother,uncles,aunts,grandpa,etc...
Luckily, they hadn't killed anyone yet. Did have a great uncle that crashed while drunk/gacked out;walked away from the accident...

keep on him. Someone has to.

my cousin used to get them all the time when they weren't so strict on it. She had 3 or 4 of them at least. They put one of those breathalizers on her ignition. No pass. No start. So at sheesh...I think I was 13 she started taking me to the bar with her. End of the night I'd blow on it and she'd drive home. By the time I was 14 or 15 she had tought me how to drive a stick. Between her and my drunk aunt I got a lot of driving practice.

It's scary how many DUI's and alcohol related accidents/deaths there are and even scarier how many drunk drivers get home safe and ticket free. In some countries you get caught once you never drive again.

    Very sorry to hear.

As a two time DUI LOSER, Luckily, I never hurt anyone but myself. I finally woke up and quit drinking. Realised that I couldn't trust myself to have just a couple. So it was time to stop. STILL trying to get my license back after six years. Get to have a Interlock device installed in my ride when(if) I get my license back. Plus three years of High Risk insurance. Not whining, just hope that maybe someone will read this and not do what I have done. It sure is not worth it.

I'd have let CHP take the truck down to impound. It's never fun being the heavy, but it's less fun being the enabler.

Safarinut: Please make sure your grand daughter gets to a counselor. She's going to feel an unbearable amount of guilt at being the only one to survive. It doesn't make sense, but that's what's going to happen. That kind of guilt makes kids do really, really stupid things, usually in an effort to "even out" the odds life dealt them. Don't just send her one or two times--it's going to be burried for a while, and if she doesn't deal with it, it's going to come back and haunt her.
