i come up with a simple idea.. it wont deter theft, but it could help identify a thief in action and not to awfully expensive..

its deer season in Kentucky, a guy showed me some pics from a game trail camera he uses last night..
then the simple idea hit me, this could be used for identifying thieves in action... point an infared game camera at your shop door... you could hang it in a corner or even outside your door high enough they couldnt reach it.. if your going on vacation set one up hidden at the end of your driveway or in a position where you can get license numbers and good shots of the vehicle being used in the theft..

the infared game camera doesnt flash or strobe... the camera also uses a memory card like your cameras and cellphones use.. i also believe they have models that you can download the picture wirelessly with a computer or laptop...

there are several models and range in price generally $75-$300 depending how nice of one you want.. i looked at a 8mp infared with rechargable battery, memory card, and usb port.. you use a laptop and connect to it to download pics...

    just an idea..

How well do they work in daylight? If so, you've got the whole day & night covered, a slick idea. Just gotta be creative where it gets mounted. It could even be in a tree close to the garage, no one would think of looking there for it.

I thought about getting one because some little bastard in my neighborhood has been stealing change out of cars. I can get one from Cabella's online close to $100.

yep, you could make a steel box with a pad lock on it.. cut a hole in your toolbox and mount it in a toolbox.. as many options and as crafty as you can be the better..
i was thinking of making one of those wind sculptures (fancy windmill) and integrating it into the sculpture and place it at an angle to my driveway. you could put it in with landscaping, make a new mailbox pole and integrate it in it, just put it in there or turn it on when you leave or go on vactaion.. many many possibilities..

if they are 30' foot tall:eek:

they can bust a game camera too..

the idea is to hide them or put them out of reach

or have other alarm systems in play so you get a fair warning to lock and load..the camera will just be secondary at that point

There is a DIY site that shows you how to use one of the battery operated remote doorbell buzzers to rig in your car, so if some opens a door (could use a motion switch), it buzzes you inside your house or motel if you are at a car show.

This is it (if this is OK) http://autospeed.com.au/cms/A_0957/article.html

  10. That great info. I have a friend that has a couple of these but it is my understanding that his flash when taking pics at night. I was not aware of the infrared ones though. I do have a regular security camera pointing at my front door that uses infrared technology but it shows a red glow around the lense when the infrared is active. I'm thinking the red glow would alert a thief though ... my friends two camera's where destroyed by some punks that trespassed on his property to fish his pond. He does not know what time of day or night they trespassed but they did find his camera's.

Definitely worth looking into though, thanks.

Wow, that's even cooler ... a wireless doorbell as an alarm, I like.

Why hide it? Put it out of reach in full site with a big sign
" Area under video surveillance! We WILL find you!"
"If you are reading this, Your photo and photo of your vehicle have been recorded off premises."

just out of reach wont do.. out of sight hidden... thieves carry pellet guns for a reason.

they see the floodlight come on and they know its there, the infared can be very hard to detect if your at an angle... plus it strobes.. so it would be more difficult to find..

I gotta say, after all my buddies have been through lately with their cars getting broken into and STOLEN, I've been thinking a LOT about these kinds of things.

I like that little buzzer/pager thing! Great for trips! Just took a two-week road trip across the country with a LOT of stuff in the car that had to stay in the car. Tried to get close to the hotel room so the car was in view, but this would be WAY better!

Put up a cheep dummy camera in plain sight with sign "smile, you're on video" and then the real camera gets hidden. if the thief busts the dummy camera he'll figure they're safe and carry on without looking for the real one???

    Just a thought,
    Russ

All sounds good in theory, but camera's don't do much. Unless you live in a small town, and the theif is from your town, having a blurry aerial shot of him isn't gonna help you much. Think of all the stores that get robbed that have cameras. It's a long shot that either you, or someone in your circle will recognize the perp. Same thing with the cops.
Just about the only way to stop a thief is to catch the bastard in the act, or ot have whatever they might steal recorded so that when it pops back up there's a paper trail.
Cameras as a detterent are one thing, but when you think about it, having someone rip you off on film doesn't really help you out much UNLESS they get caught. It's not really gonna help you catch em.

We've had some break-ins in my neighborhood lately. One house gas been hit 3x in a month. My neighbor and I made a huge 'Smile you're on camera' sign and gave it to the homeowner. Last break in on my block! Fuckin thieves piss me off!

On my house front door (on the inside) I hollowed out a small area and placed a tiny color surveillance camera ($20 at a computer swap meet). I ran the video wires to the TV RCA input on the back of the big screen and the wall wart power is plugged in near the door. The wires are hidden pretty well too.

To activate the camera, I changed the standard button on a regular doorbell to a dual circuit type ($4.99 at Rat Shack) - one for the doorbell circuit, the other to the channel circuitry of the unused TV remote to select channel 3 when it's pressed. Then when the doorbell rings, the remote changes the channel and the camera displays the image of whoever is at the door on the TV immediately (as long as it's turned on).

From the outside it appears to be a standard look through peephole.

Pressing an input button on the satellite remote control turns the TV back to the receiver. Selecting that input also allows me to monitor the front porch area at any time as well.

Works pretty slick, took a whole Saturday to setup. The toughest part was running the wiring behind the crown moldings (I dislike unprotected wireless setups).

I have one of those wildlife cameras and the pics are good, daylight or not. Other good thing is one of those wireless Harbor Freight driveway alarms. Works like a champ, $20. If it goes off after dark and youre not supposed to be here, you have two choices - you can either outrun a bullet or not.

I'm still holding out for motion sensing machine gun turrets.

  27. I have my 3 dailys locked at night with a steering lock device (not a club) attached....radio face plates off...and a clearly readable hand lettered sign placed on the front seat. One says " surprises come from the darkest places..."; another that says "Ever get the feeling you're being watched...?, and the 3rd car has one that reads " go ahead...ever heard of infrared?" All 4 of my neighbors in my culdesac have had their cars broken into...no one has ever touched mine....yet. We also have a very good security system in place. I kinda like the signs, tho.....

Years ago I worked with a guy who had some stuff stolen from his car at work. He wired a capacitor to discharge if door was opened without turning off with a hidden key under fender.(Today you could wired it to a remote through a relay)Came out to find door jimmyed open but nothing gone.Zapped him pretty hard and he sure didn't want to find out if would zap him again.

Easy! an electronically fired .50 Cal (the army has them in use) and a motion detection device wired in. No need to wait just need a few million for the weapon system
