Well yhe axle saga continues.... I found out today that the left and right axles don't match. Some idiot thought he'd shouve the wrong year axle / seal and retainer into the housing. all I can find is these codes on the axle tube:

N166 UU It should be the codes to determine what it came from. It is a GM coil spring rear-end that has some kind of factory looking bump-stop extenders on it. That's about all I know about it. It looks like I'll have to find another axle now since the one I have doesn't even have a surface for the correct seal to ride on. I swear....some people are just plain idiots.

Oh yeah it's a 10-bolt with the two half circles out of the gasket on each side.

    Thanks in advance,
    George

I'm gonna give you a call in a bit. By the way on the "original" looking side, where it is not leaking, It has an outboard seal with a almost square bearing retainer. It's a posi 3.42 with GMC stamped gears but those could have come from anywhere. And the axle I pulled out is 28 spline....

Man! that sounds like it. I went and re-measured everything and it all matches. Out of curiosity what did it come out of? I think I found the right bearing and seal too. I looked it up on autozones site for a '69 Grand Prix and they had a listing for 8.5 ring that had a different P/N.
