Projects nothing to do today- how about build 2 t bucket frames

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Jul 8, 2016.

  1. just the way circumstances fell together, or fell apart, A lack of planning and there's nothing to do.
Well let's cut up that tube and make a couple T bucket frames.

One will be a straight frame- 26-1/2 with 45* joints and tube caps.
The other will be a tapered frame 24" to 29" with meters and fish plates.

I bet they are on Craigslist by the end of the day :)

I'll post it in real time as it goes.

I miss those days in my old shop when I had material on the shelf and thought up clever ways to use it when things were slow. These days those materials are far away and pricey.
Nice traditional T Bucket frame, they'll go quick.

  6. First one done. Welded and ground - polished. Ready to go
    This is 26-1/2 straight

First of all, you do great work; I wish I'd started with one of your frames. However, what kind of documentation do you supply with these? We all know the problems with registering these cars. Can you supply the equivalence of an "MSO". Unfortunately, legalities seem to trump skill these days.

  13. At the moment none.
If it's not a bunch of hoops to jump, I might look into being able to issue a "MSO".
I could generate a notarized BOS, certificate of authenticity, and an affidavit. I've got titles with each one of those.
Hopefully the title already exists and someone just needs a new frame.

Sure glad I live where you need none of the above BS.
When I built my T frame I had a VIN number assigned to the car and the frame was not an issue.

    Nice job on those!
Do you turn that big-ass fan off when you weld, or do you just turn up the gas flow to shield the arc?

  17. Thanks !

Turn it to the side or turn it off.
On a day like today it stays off about as long as you can hold your breathe

And If anyone has questions feel free to ask. I'd get a kick out of helping anyone build their own.

Aren't MSO's for selling complete cars? I've never heard of frames needing one. It's a part. The buyer would need a receipt for sure.

  19. Lots of motorcycle frames come with MSOs
The mso generates a vin # too

You do nice work! I like the way you extended the rear crossmember backside vertical ends to cover the open rear ends of the side rails. Makes a nice clean job! Regards, Dave.

    Nice work.
On what is needed to get a title with that frame, every state in the Union is different in what they want.
Some would most likely accept a letterheaded receipt with something like 24X29 Shop built T bucket frame. Others may want documentation that says it was welded by a certified welder
At any rate it's do all the homework and finding out before you start spending money not the day the finished car is due to be inspected.

Even aftermarket motorcycle transmissions have an MSO. I own a bike that has a Shovelhead frame with a title for it's VIN, and then I also carry MSO certificates for the engine and transmission. Just in case....

I like you're wooden frame table. After a season of weld scortches you can just screw a new plywood top on and be like new.

  27. That's my "Everything" table. It's quite handy for just about anything.
Very rare to find it empty.

When doing more complicated frames there's a tube framework/ jig that sets on top.
My steel table buts right up and makes it longer
