HA HA Roddinron! Even if she was and he tried something, she'd probably rip his nuts off and use them for earrings. Fortunately for all of us, the kid really is supernice. He's married now too...

Yep. On Alfred St. You lived across the street. You bought your red Chevy crew cab when you lived there. I was probably 14 or so at the time. Just goes to show what kind of impression you can leave with people.

I recognized who you were a couple months back when you mentioned the license plate on that Vette. You have obviously moved on to drier pastures. Me too, Portland is a nice place to visit, but the damp gets old.

I´m mostly amazed at anyone that age taking interest in anything of this presumed vintage to build into even what is considered a "Rat" Rod. I for one think that´s cool, and should be encouraged.
Maybe the "RR" -stuff is what he identifies with as it´s "mainstream" for his time, and that´s all he knows? Besides late-models, iPods, mountain bikes and skateboards, or whatever else the vast majority of people his age are into?
Maybe he´s into it because that´s all he can afford on his highschool -kid´s budget; Wants to learn to work on stuff because he has more time on his hands than money to sling away?
Anyway, I can see Your reluctancy to sell him so much of Your own stuff, but why not find out what he´s about, and in case he strikes You as someone halfway capable of more than just talk, give him a push in the right direction, like? After all, most of us know of a lot of stuff sitting somewhere else that "could be had", but never did because the car or the occasion just wasn´t quite right for ourselves. At the worst case scenario, this stuff might even be at the brink of getting scrapped/parted out into oblivion, instead of someone working on it. Why not share some of Your knowledge on the ones You might know of locally, plus what kind of work it might take to get them running? Maybe share some pointers on what all this entails, how to get started, what works/what doesn´t, what common mistakes to avoid, etc.etc. Whether he´s genuinely serious, interested and up to it or not, most likely You can see that within the first 5 minutes of a conversation anyway.
For one thing, at the rate it´s going, it sure isn´t getting any easier for anyone to get started on playing with this stick-and boulder -era stuff, which itself isn´t getting any less obsolete. Just my 2c.

Get outta my damn yard you scruffians...........

Actually, the bodies are your property, and you already seem to have plans for them, so there's no reason to "help" someone out. These people telling you that you have made a mistake probably don't own project car that they are willing to sell cheap, or give away, just to help a youngster out. Especially if they already have plans for it........

BTW, I have some misc. tin behind my shop that I'd be happy to sell cheap, or maybe even give away, to the right young guy. I picked it up because the price was right, and I didn't want it to be scrapped. I have no plans to sell my 55 chevy belair project or my 50 chevy AD pickup project just to help a youngster out......so get outta my damn yard.....:)

That was probably pretty discouraging for him..He is probably thinking the same thing I used to think about hot rod guys...That was until I met "old man jim" and the H.A.M.B.. Now I realize that Hot rod, Rat rod, Street rod, and Muscle car guys are all different. Hopefully he has not starting looking for a vw or Mitsu and is still interested in old cars. Alot of younger guys (me anyway)are not aware of the fact that a Traditional rod and a Rat rod are waaaay diffrent

Oh good lord....you guys have convinced me.....the next time some young guy likes my 55 chevy, I should just give it to him, you know, to help him get started.

Nevermind that it took me nearly 20 years to get my dream car.....

If this young man is serious about building a car, he'll find one in his price range, I never let a "no" discourage me from getting what I wanted, I just kept looking.........You know, it's maybe an old lesson that people might have forgotten, but if a young man really has to work for something, he'll usually appreciate it more once he has it.

Why would you guys want to browbeat the original poster into giving up car bodies that he has plans for.....would you do it?????????

It amazes me how many people think that being young and asking someone to sell you a car somehow entitles the kid to your property- and apparently at a deep discount. I thought this was kind of a funny post- at least intended to be. I guess I won't be talking to any high school kids if it will then become MY responsibility to raise them, provide for their wants, etc.

What a D*ck. Guys like you are making hot rodding die. You'll probably wind up dead in a car wreck, and your cars will be sold for scrap and that kid will wind up driving a honda. Go knock some ice cream cones out of little kids hands while your at it.

I can't believe all the h.a.m.b.ers that think High School kids should be building RAT RODS!

I kept the dogs in the house! I thought that was Minnesota nice of me!

Just cause the kid said rat rod didn't necessarily mean he was going to build a pile of shit. Everyone seems to get bent out of shape over two little words. Even if it wasn't up to your standards everyone has to start some where. At least point him in a direction of where he might find a car to build.

  17. I'd make that kid my friend-he might be willing to give you a lot of help just to learn something
If he's looking at your place looking at old stuff he can't be all bad-one way of keeping him off the street.

I dont think Oldpaint is obligated to do anything.

He doesn't have to sell a car, point him in the right direction, or teach him.

If he feels like doing it ( and if the kid wants to be taught), thats awesome.
But its not a requirement, IMO.

Where the fuck do you get off calling a guy names for not wanting to sell HIS property.........this sense of entitlement is a bad omen for us all

I guess I missed the part of your post where you asked all the Ann Landers types for advice. They'er yours and you can do what you want with them. Used to be an old guy when I was a kid kept a '32 parked so that just the nose was showing. Liked having young guys come by and talk to him. Never sold it while I was there. Now for the advice you didn't ask for: your wife wants to to keep your junk out of sight so the neighbors can't see it.

Sled Driver. Neat story. There are a lot more nice kids out there then you think. My wife bought a new car. Dealer said bring it back in a couple of days and the lot boy will detail it. I took it back the lot boy drove me home, pleasent kid, clean cut. I ask him if lot boy was all he did. He said no he went to collage full time, helped his dad in his business when he needed him and had a little detail business of his own and gave me his business card. I had him detail my hot rod to help him out. Did a good job. I'm thinking how come the only guys I hear about that are his age are jamming needles in their amrs or snorting crap up their nose? I think there are a whole lot more of lot boys then there are the other kind. We just don't hear about them. They are to busy doing stuff to make the nightly news.

  22. Everyones definition of a rat rod is different is what i think most h.a.m.b.ers are just saying... I would encourage any kid to build a rat rod as long as we agree that he cant cut corners on steering brakes and suspension.. Now if all his cash goes to updating those first and he drops a old engine in it that leaks a damn court of oil a day and its going to need patch panels around the entire car who cares! Its a start and to me i guess thats a rat rod Its a churched up piece of rat trash to most but that teenager did it with his own 2 hands just the way his grandfather did. Only difference is that old car was maybe only 15 to 20 years old when his pappy did it. If your a car guy like i am and everyone i know and everyone reading this think of this.. You may not want to sell that old car but i bet you know someone with other old cars that may come off of one. Actually have him call me i know some guys hell if he wants a sedan i got a good start for him in my back yard if he has cash in hand if he wants any other kind of old car 60 impala buick ext.. i got a buddy who has all kinds of that laying around he would sale i will even help drag it out and load it with him.. I had plans for that sedan but i know where 2 better ones are so for the right cash he would actually be helping me out! Money talks except with heirlooms i understand i wish i had my grandpas 55 belair it would never be for sale but it would never sit and rot either

  23. Tell me about that, I've had kids email up on our eBay stuff with that sort of attitude too.

No one cut me a break when I first started in this stuff, I had to earn money and pay the same price as everyone else. (the one that still kills me is the '49 Merc I could have bought if I'd had $1000 - when I was like 12 - ). Had to learn how to make deals and how to find good stuff cheap. If you just hand it to them on a silver platter, they'll never learn anything, it will just be another toy someone gave them and maybe 1 in 100 will actually do something with it.

  24. I didn't see ANY post asking him to give anything away or raise the kid. I'd guess I have a very different opinion largely because I REMEMBER getting up the nerve to knock on doors and ask. As I recall I made the mistake of asking a few hardasses.... good thing I had the nerve to keep asking.

I remember reading a recent post from a HAMBer who gave out hot rod hotwheels to kids he ran across who took even the slightest interest in his car.

Ambassador or Asshat I suppose thats a matter of character.

I'm not saying oldpaint should have done anything different. At 16, even if none of what I was asking about was for sale, it would have made my day to have been asked what kind of car I "thought" I wanted, how much I "thought" I could afford or even told when the next burger joint cruise night was.

I was given some bodywork tips while trying to straighten out some small dings on my first car by a old guy in my neighborhood named "Smitt". I'm real glad he took the time.

No one said anything about the Kid wanting something for free. No one said to give him your shit. All most of us are saying is Instead of telling him "Nothings for sale" give him a chance he might surprise you. Or..... You could push another young guy into the Import world or even worse, push him into build a car that is unsafe bc he didnt have any guidance. I am not saying adopt him, feed him, clothe him. A simple, "Hey man ill be out in the garage between 3 and 5 today, stop by if you want"

if the kid is willing to spend time and money to build an old car i think he will respect it enough to take car of it, if he comes back let him make you an offer on one of them. maybe you could even offer to help him with the car if you aren't too much of a grouch

I'll never sell any kid off the street anything that I really like. If it's a kid I know and I know what his intentions are, I MAY sell it if I'm in the mood to sell it. Why so picky? Because I've sold cars to kids in the past and have never seen one NOT get destroyed. It's sickening to see something you poured some real time and cash into get destroyed and shit on by some dumbass kid.

Case in point... heading out to roundup in the Willys... some 16 year old in a beat to death F150 rolls up next to me and asks if he can buy my truck. I said it wasn't for sale. He asked a few questions and I told him how I got it from a fairly abusive hunting lease and am trying to bring it back up to snuff. He says "oh... well me and my buddies were looking for an old 4x4 to go through the really nasty stuff on my parents hunting lease so we don't mess up our newer trucks" (they're "new" trucks looked as bad as my old one). HE SAYS THIS AFTER I JUST TOLD THE LITTLE 'TARD I GOT IT OFF A DEER LEASE.

    Getdafuckouttaherekid...

    -Chris

  30. there are plenty of cars out there. if he is a true rodder he will search and find one...should oldpaint feel guilty for not selling? hell no. it is his stuff and if he doesn't want to sell it then that's fine. if this kid gets discouraged after one rejection and decides to build some honda piece of junk then good...they can have him because he wasn't a rodder anyway. i found this hobby is all about the search and not only for the car or project but about the know how on how to fix it up.
