Projects Nova Wagon Project!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harrison, Jan 20, 2009.

  1. My ’32 project isn’t anything special, but even at that, the cost of building it is exhausting. I was talking with a friend (wild32hotrod) a few weeks back about his ’55 Chevy wagon. He has built a really cool cruiser on a tight budget. The thought of doing something newer for short $$$ really appealed to me. I told him I’d love to follow the ’32 with something like his wagon. A week later he was calling. He had found a Chevy II wagon for short $$$...... & I love Chevy II wagons (had a ’67 several years ago).

I went last weekend to see the car. It is all apart but it looks like most of the big pieces are there. Outside of some rust in the floors & in the bottoms of the quarters, the car is in remarkable shape. It comes with new floor panels & quarter patches too.

Anyway, I kicked it around for a few days, trying to talk myself out of it… but I just couldn’t do it. I bought it yesterday. It’ll give me something to tinker with once the ’32 hits the road.

Can anyone tell me which 1960’s GM cars had 15” steel wheels with a 5x4.75” bolt pattern? I’m hunting something that will accept a set of dog dish caps or '63 Corvette spinner hubcaps…. ;)

think the 15" steelies were possibly a option on the 67/68/69 ??? big bodies....they are sorta hard to find when your looking...as gm had started the 14" thing in 57.....a side note...i think :)rolleyes:) the stock chevy II dog dish caps are smaller than the regular cars.....been a few years since i dabbled in the deuce's:D i did have a couple wagons....including one that looked almost dead one the one you posted...

Hahaha, that's some funny stuff! Looks like a cool project, but I'd rethink the front wheels.

Most 60's GM stuff ran 14's even full size cars with the 5 on 5 BC. 15" 5 on 4.75 BC steelies were not that commn, you'll be into early to mid-70's A-bodies for 15" steelies for the most part but the early dog dish caps will still fit, had mid 60's dog dishes on a set of early 70's 15 X 7's. Check Montes for 15 X 6 and Buick/Olds/ Pintiac A body wagons for 15 X 7, the plain jane Stage 1 GS's and 455 SD Formula Firebirds also came with 15 X 7 steelies and poverty caps. Around here they are all but extinct thanks to the demo derby crowd. Best bet is just buy new from Coker or one of the others in the sizes you need, when you consider your time, gas and frustration in trying to find the right offset and prepping them for paint they're worth it.

  9. very cool. i'd like to do one some day, as a two door

  10. This should get even easier if I'm hunting wheels from the '70's.

That's right 57 and up 14 inch. I think what you want is 49-56 15x5 inch wheels like the ones they used on the 1963 Z11 cars they have the correct center you are looking for, the later 70's 15x7 do not have the correct looking center I think you want.. If you need help finding some pm me I have friends that restore 55-56 chevys that can help.

I've got two 15x7's and two 15x8's if your interested in either, let me know. Seems like you should be able to find some closer though.....PM me if you need 'em.

I think some 15/6 and 15/4's would be cool under that wagon!

    BTW, very smoooth complexion. Nice.

I think some of the Monte Carlo's from the early 70's came with 15x 7" ralleys. I had several Chevy II's some early style and some 66-67's. I think I ran 15x7 on back and 14x6" on front of one of the early body style nova's with the police cap's and no band's, had a nice stance. I think you have to kinda be careful of 15" wheels on front of the early body style because the front wheels are so far forward with the different fenders on those cars.

I think hes right about the front wheels. I see alot with 15s on the rear and 14s on the front. I just run 14s all the way around on my 63 SS . .

Looks like a good car and deal. You coming to Nashville?

  17. 80's non cop Caprices. 5x4.75" bolt pattern 15x6 or 15x7 rims. I have a set on my 57' Canadian Pontiac with mid 60's pontiac poverty caps.

The local tire shop has the rims for $20 each around here.

I am looking to do a similar thing with my 63 hardtop...
    Front - 14 x 6 (3.5 bs)
    Rear - 14 or 15 x 7 (4.5 bs)

I want to use my current dog dish caps, but need a 5 x 4.75 rim (i still have 4 lug right now). The rims also have to be compatible with disc brakes.

I was told to look for 78-88 G-body car rims. I spent a bunch of time at the pick and pull a couple of weeks ago. All of the 14 inchers that had the right backspace were welder together and used as car stands.

I found a few g-body rims, that were 14 or 15 inch, but they were too wide.

Here is a picture of smoothies that were modified to accept pontiac poverty caps:

I wonder if this is the case. I was told my dog dish caps are off of a belair/biscayne. I have them on the stock 4 lug steel wheels.

I need some wheels to roll around on, so until I can find what I really want, I found a set of 14/15 rallys for $150. I may buy these cheap bullet caps to go with them:

Here ya go, I scribed the I.D of the caps on the wheel, drilled and tapped the wheels in a mill, and used a bolt as a jamb nut on the back of the wheel. Loctited it all and have had NO problems at all.
