So I did the oil change on my 351 w. It’s filled from the top so do I need to run it for a little while to get it through the system so I can see it on the dipstick? It looks like an after market dipstick if that matters. I pulled it and it was clean.

Start it to fill the oil filter, then shutdown and check the level.

I have always added oil, run the car at idle for a minute or so. Confirm oil pressure on gauge and shut it off.
    Then check stick

What year is your engine, year is usually on the block above the starter.

^^^ I would not run an engine if the oil is not showing on the dipstick!!! ^^^
If you have filled the engine with its correct volume of oil, let it sit for 5 minutes. If it still doesn't show on the dipstick it might not be the correct dipstick for your engine.

You should see it on the dipstick after adding the oil, and if you put in a new filter, the level will go down a little after you run it the first time and it fills the filter.

Different oil pans take different amounts of oil. Different oil pans use different dipstick and dipstick locations...there are a lot of varieties of small block Ford engines, and folks sometimes mix and match parts and don't get it quite right.

If you put in 4 or 5 quarts, that should be enough to show up on the dipstick...if not, check what pan you have (car? truck? front or rear or double sump?) etc.

Picture of your engine and the filler. Did you put the drain plug back in?

I would only make a suggestion.
I believe if it has a stock oil pan installed .... It should take 5 quarts.

So do your oil change using 5 quarts .... start it up to fill the oil filter as suggested. Then check the oil.
Mark the full line as it should be full. .... Maybe the aftermarket stick is fine?

My neighbor has a shoebox with a OT FI 302 installed.
The engine sits at such a terrible angle it reads one quart low when it has the proper 5 quarts in it.

Just suggesting there are reasons why a engine will have proper amount of oil & read wrong on the stick.

Hopefully you replaced the drain plug before adding the oil? Might want to take a look underneath......

    ^^^^^This is funny as hell!
I had my wheels swapped out on my Olds this morning and while I was there, I had them change my oil. I brought 10 quarts with me of VR1 20/50 (my favorite drink after a good Makers Mark Old Fashioned). The kid said, "10 quarts?". I said, "trust me!" Point is not all cars have the same pan under them or stick as they did when they left the factory. If you doubt the dip stick, drain the oil and use a borescope to see where the pickup is in relation to the end of the dip stick.

Is there a line on the inside? Or something that tells you where filled is

    Thanks

from what I have read it needs 5 and that’s what I put in.

I’m not sure if it’s stock or not. I’ll take a look and see what I’m working with.

It’s from a 70 Terino. So from what I read it should be 5. I changed the filter and ran it and still nothing showing at all. I’m thinking it may be the wrong dipstick? I wish I would have measured how much came out.

You could look at the dipstick, maybe you could figure out what it's from. If it's an original Ford part, it should have a part number that will tell you what it fits. If it's an aftermarket dipstick, perhaps a chrome one? it won't.
