  5. well, I got the rear section of the roof line up pretty good. I was going to do some more trimming but was hesitant for fear of doing it backwards. I have a tendency of reversing things. It could have been more precise but I'm happy with the way it turned out. I can handle this........

You should have nice tight joints. No gaps before you weld. Don't use bugger welds to fill up empty gaps.

Take your time marking the area to be cut and scribe it with a scratch awl. Then cut inside the line and sneak up on the scribed line with grinders and files. Torches should not be used to cut!

  7. thanks guys........
everybody has there own comfort zone of chopping a roof and re-attaching it. I don't like "nice tight joints" I like a small gap so I can add material and control both panels.
As for "bugger welds" , my lincolin mig is set on #2 power, #3 power blows a hole in the metal.
I appreciate the comments, I need all the help I can get.

  8. well, I got some more welding done, plus a roof patch. Also with the help of my friends Tim W. and Bill I have a plan to match up the rear side window beauty line and rear window opening......

Your "comfort zone" of welding on paint is ridiculous. The impurities lead to pin holes lead to paint failures.

A nice way to say that is something like "hey bro great job on the car. It would make your life a lot easier if you stripped the paint off where your going to weld. It'll penetrate better and be a cleaner weld devoid of impurities." See how much more polite that is? Just because this is the internet doesn't mean we shouldn't be civil with each other

I'm not the anything police but that was a rude comment to a guy that's working hard to build a car and doing a fine job of it. If someone spoke to you that way face to face youd probably not be pleased. I know I wouldn't be.

  13. thanks for the heads up.......I'm pretty sure its epoxy primer. The edges where I cut the pieces are bare metal so not to worry. I've painted several cars and know how to prep them before paint. I think the pics make it look worse than it actually.
    Thanks again for your concern

thanks for the complements adam, I really appreciate them.

this is the "new improved" post sesame street HAMB...:D Better to just stand back and say nothing....Sound advice could be construed as being critical and hurtful, so better to not give any advice, sound or otherwise. Please restrict your HAMB posts to Ooooh's, aaaahs, and blatant pandering...;)

This is how every fuckin build thread ends up.... Know it alls that can't refrain from "voicing" thair expertise. There's plenty of non car related threads or better term would be social threads.

The old HAMB was littered with build threads, dudes building cars in the confines of thair one car garages.... Now it's littered with Facebook type threads. Go play on those.

OK at the risk of "death threats", I will say it first, that chop would not have been my first choice as far as side profile but not everyone has the same taste! More appealing to me is texkbc '34. I would have to see the finished '34 maybe it will all fall together nicely. Having said that, do I have the talent to do what you are doing, I will know soon! Still watching to see where this goes..................................

  17. the only difference between my chop and teckbc '34 is 1/2".......
I want to build cool hot rods so I copy the cool hot rods I see on the HAMB and other sites. The only reason I'm on the HAMB is to learn about hot rods and customs, period, then I got an obsession to build them, then I get the obsession to drive them. Which I do both. This is gonna be a bad ass hot rod ,paint contaminated bugger welds and all.

My untrained eye say's there's more than just a 1/2" diff. just in the "A" pillar.
This is a good example of why I don't post build threads, because of people like me!

  20. it's easy to make that mistake because there's no windshield frame in my hot rod. The frame fills up the opening and makes it look smaller. You'll see.....

Not to beat this to death but it's clear there is not a w/frame in your build "yet".
What catches my eye between the 2 chops is how teckbc top of door and front roof line have a clear downward slope to them, it's 2 diff. style chops. There is no rite or wrong just 2 diff. styles. Many years ago I personally didn't like "A" pillars leaned back, I liked the stock angle. Now at almost 70 I am leaning (pun intended) towards the "leaned back a little look" A pillar. Times change, I change but what hasn't changed is the little things that turn ones crank..........................

  23. I get you now......yes there is a difference in that respect. I didn't lean my A pillar posts back (yet).

thanks fabber, thats' exactly what I'm going to do.

  24. well, just a little more welding and I can start grinding and filling.I put a picture in of the inside just to show why I like to leave a slight space between panels.

  25. well, it's not as good as I wanted or as good as a lot of metal work I've seen on the HAMB.....but for me it's not bad. Add some lead or metal on metal filler and it will look great.
I have to find a source to purchase some good metal files so I can up my game.

  26. Great stuff.
Your doing it, and it's your car.
It's going to be a bitchin Hot Rod, and I'm keen to see the Hemi part you mentioned at the beginning, but that's getting a little ahead of the game.
Keep up the good work, you may be driving it by Summer at this place.

  27. thanks kiwijeff....I'm gonna be driving her in the spring...unless something else wears out, or brakes in my body and needs to be repaired. "Whats wrong with me Doc..."you need to be repaired"

  28. Rich: manyolcars brings up a great point. A friend of mine bought a chopped 5wndw that was heavily hammered. I had all the pieces from my sedan so gave them to him. He raised the top an inch or so. Here's a pic. 061.JPG
