What caused the paint on this fiberglass car to do this..and what would be the best way to remove it without damageing the bondo or other filler on it paint remover or sodablasting or.....????
Go drag your knuckles through your own shit, what happened to having a since of humor and just fuckin with someone just to do it huh? I guess Your one of those city boys that can't take a ribbing or even watch it Happen to someone else. I wasn’t even doing it in a mean way, in fact i was being civilized, you sir On the other hand make me look positively tame by comparison, hell you Even have the audacity to attack what is plainly humor, (A) 1926 vw bug on 38's with a Honda 440cui V5 : seriously... that doesn’t make you at least smirk? Where you Hitler’s love child? Your just bastard from a basket! (10 points to anyone who knows what movie I got that from)
The bondo's already damaged... anywhere uv or water came into exposure via the cracks. I'ts probably old old laquer. laquer dries hard through and through and is inflexibile. enamel skins over and takes much longer to harden. the door of my 62 galaxie looks just like that.
No but an AC Ace, thats traditional.......... Hey VW boy, I HOPE you were not quoting There will be blood, that was a shit movie! Now I would be impressed if anyone knew this without looking it up, it seems to fit in with the theme of the thread........ I said 'get fucked', you great beer-sodden bag of shit! Kind-a right for a drooling moron that quote, but if you fuck with guys like Harms Way, you are truly fucking with the wrong person.
On the boat tail thing with the paint failure, it looks like someone sprayed lacquer right over the gel coat, incompatibility issue. I would first try brushing on some lacquer thinner on a spot and see if it will lift. As loose as it is, it may just bubble up and wipe off...if you're lucky. Back to the Cobra, considering it's summer I would first sit that thing out in the sun on a really hot day and let her bake before doing anything. Heed the warnings about getting all the release agent washed off before doing anything to it. I would use poly based products all the way.
Oximoron, If they are fake then they can't be real. There are real ones that have been modified. Natural or not they're still fun to play with. And just like cars when someone modifies them the owners are more willing to show them off, God bless them owners.
Hey Flathead okie... I suspect the others are correct. That looks like an aged lacquer paint job to me. Lacquer gets so hard and tends to shrink. The fiberglass swells and shrinks. Virtually every old lacquer job looks like that. It must have been a beautiful paint job at one time. When I was a kid I saw a car with 40 coats of hand rubbed lacquer. Theres not a paint job I've seen in the 47 years since that even came close to that beautiful thing I wish this thread hadnt taken such a dopey turn. Painting and prepping fiberglass is worthy of a decent discussion.
Featherfill will get it done top notch, but be sure to get all the release agents/wax off of it before you prime it out...
I agree Chaz, painting and prepping fiberglass would be a great thread on here. I tend to use fiberglass when doing interiors to fill gaps, and also on exterior panels too, but not as a filler, as a buider for attaching panels together when welding is not an option. This thread was highjacked and has become basically useless because of one persons opinion. Remember this, you don't always has to open your mouth and spout your opinion, you can just keep it shut and see if you might learn something......or wait, do you already know it all?
Tell you what- I'd take a fiberglass Cobra Daytona Coupe ANY day (I know, he's not working on one)... Chaz, hope the tank is going well!
I dont like glass either. But I have both steel 32 truck and a glass roadster 29 I think rodding is about building it yourself and about the ride and not buying it,But building it.Reality is what you make it.It may not be real to you .But it's real to him.About bodywork consult a paint store service rep . All that stuff has been formulated ,Even down to sandpaper. You can laugh at them when your cruisin in your cobra
Hey Chuck, what color did ya paint it? I mean, it's been two days since you started this thread While eveybody's lining up for the pissing contest, you've been workin' on it, right? You should be done by now.....
We had a Big Block Cobra when I was a little kid (actually I didn't the ol' Mans shop did) I would think that the big ass grin would have been a clue to the intent of my statement. I personally don't have anything but respect for harms way but the truth is I probably isn't any more dangerous to fuck with him than the 'beaner. Not that any of that makes any difference, I'm probably not headed down under any time soon and I'm assumeing that you probably aren't comming up here. Gawd I love drama.
What about "aluminums for airplanes and beercans, I want my cobra all steel"...just doesn't sound right does it? My mack had a steel cab and fiberglass doors and hood. alot of semi's use aluminium for the cab construction, I was suprised to find mine was made of steel. you would think that the fiberglass would be weak but I had a diesel dummy try passing me on the right as he was getting on the interstate and flattened my mirror against the fiberglass door it was bolted to without any damage to the door. I'm sure there is good or cheap glasswork out there. glass has the capabilities to be a good product but the billybob Mac Kitkar bodies out of back alley shops and bathtub manufacturers laid up by illegals with chopperguns to me look incomplete, trashy and cheap compared to what could be done with glass. Nothing against the illegals themselves and their hardworking skills but a shop that cheats on labor cheats you on quality and design.
I just did a hull repair on one of my Seadoos, and after the glass work, I used a little glaze putty to finish the imperfections followed by two coats of 2-part epoxy primer. I let the primer cure overnight, scuffed with 550 grit wet/dry and painted.
Breast augmentation dates back to the 1890's...So I guess fake titties ARE traditional http://www.beyondniptuck.com/history/
Sorry man, the AC Ace bit was meant to be tongue in cheek, the rest was directed at the moron Bigblock225. I have nothing but respect for you 'Beaner, seriously! It just pissed me off that he has the balls to tell off Harms Way. What a Dick! Sorry for the confusion. Doc.
Doc, I'm with you - blockhead 225 is a twat! I deliberately didn't respond when he tried to get me to bite at him after I pointed out his first post was completly un needed. I come here to learn and shoot the breeze about old cars (particularly the traditional stuff but not exclusively) and have no time for fkwits that have no other purpose than to hack other people down. rant over.... wanders back to workshop .
groucho had a beautiful 32 5 window that was a glass body, maybe he might have some pointers as well... here' a pic:
