Hot Rods Numbers on doors and...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chili Phil, Jul 30, 2018.

  1. There was a distinction between gas and fuel (alcohol for the most part) in several classes unless you were in a street legal class like a gasser was prior to the '65 Rule change [NHRA].

For example __/GA would be __/Gas Altered a large mill gas altered would be A/GA. But being a non-street legal class altered also came in fuel mode. A large milled fuel altered would be A/FA. When nitro came back in vogue then there came a AA classification. AA/FA would have been a nitro burner[someone should correct this is I am wrong I am working off of memory here]. With few exceptions you would not see a street car with ___/GA on it flanks, and definitely not ___/FA on its flank.

  3. Yep you definitely need to paint those wheels. LOL

Let me make nice here. I like it real well. ;)

  4. Thanks, Benno. Probably the only HAMB friendly part is the faded primer.

  7. Thanks. It's a hoot to drove. Like all of our cars, it's an ongoing project. I'm going to paint it, so it won't fit the HAMB at all. Either way, I love to thrash it.

Got back from Wendover. And the Nugget car show. Thinking about the cars with numbers and classes on them – some of the exhibitors would be embarrassed if they knew how silly their choices were. Some were on really nice cars – but their designations detracted from enjoying them.

This car "Rocks", and if I were to build a "street-version" like it, it would be lettered and all. No one should be asking anyone else if it's right or wrong, just do it.

We need more wild and crazy Hot Rods out there once again, it's what made Hot Rods WILD !

  14. So you'd build it with no radiator, no front brakes, 25% setback, gutted interior? THAT'S what an altered is, if it isn't built like that.....it's not an altered.

  15. I'm going to build something and put a fake sponsor on it. "Steve (Toad) Yaso Engineering" Probably do it with washed out letters over sanded off paint fake patina

  19. Hey, Junji, what if your car doesn't have windows to put the numbers on? AND the NHRA tech guy has run out of shoe polish and has to use masking tape?? :D

And Phil, your RPU is a hot rod in my book, paint, or not. It would have been in the '60's, and is now!

    Hey Dean,
The open roadsters and RPUs racing at Lions did have some tape, but most of the time, it was white shoe polish, water soluble, of course. Anything to allow the tower identification spotters clear vision as to who was racing in the lanes was allowed. Also, for the return road ladies handing out the timing slips after the runs.

Sorry, I took most of my Lions films from the spectator's side and not the tower side. Too much glare and sun flares during the day blurred the images.

So, we can assume these RPUs racing had their numbers on the body panels somewhere. Nice RPU with the masking tape, from those good old drag racing days for a teenager !!!

  24. Funny I actually have an old race car that will probably be a driver (always wanted a street driven altered) and I most likely will not letter it.

I am going to put some of those old water slide decals from different states in the quarter glass though. :D

@jnaki the old mans roadster used to get tape numbers and class on it. Seems like I used to see cars that got taped a lot. We always tape the @raven 's roadster when it races. Nothing when it is on the street.

  25. The track will write them on your car when you pay to get in, at least the numbers that count that day.

I say do to YOUR car/truck ,what ever you own ,what brings back those memories that make you feel good or makes someone else remember those simpler time. And to those “nay sayers” I say- show me what you got/don’t tell me about what your buddy’s got/don’t tell me how fast your car is/don’t tell me how fast your buddy’s car is/you get the message.

The way it was around here at the time we first started bracket racing (70s) at the local track. No shoe polish on the car, no shoe polish on the fresh plexiglass windows that scratched if you looked at them wrong. Shoe polished numbers and dial in on the slick and passenger side windshield.

And everyone had their own bottle of white shoe polish in their toolbox.
