I would like to put a numerical stencil on the radiator of the A v/8 I am building. Where would I find a 14 to 18'' stencil in the old English style of a 2 ,or 9?

    thanks,
    jim

I looked at that site also. It's around 40.00 for a stencil of one number that size.

What you need is to find someone with an old time overhead projector and cut your own....

... or maybe find an artist at a show to paint what you want on a piece of cardboard or something, then cut it out.

Make your own. Just do it. Practice for a while, till you get good enough to paint the real thing. Expect to spend a few days at it.

Sign shop sounds like what I need.

Artist supply shops carry a material called oak tag board, similar to poster board but heaver in construction,it's large enough to get both numerals side by side, just draw out what you need and cut with a X-acto knife.

Make sure when you spray you don't apply the paint too heavy. HRP

HRP it's going to be tough as it's on a rad.

I'm thinking that HRP is saying that they have the heavier stock that you can cut the stencil out of and then use the stencil on the radiator. I haven't looked but both Michaels and Hobby lobby do have stencils in various sizes and fonts.
OR, one of the resident damned good at drawing something members might offer to draw the nubers out on a sheet of paper roll it up and mail it to you if they knew the dimensions of the opening in the radiator shell and the size you wanted on the letters.

    Thanks Mr.and Jim
Just got the new rad back from the welder, mounts were not wide enough to cover the mounting holes. I would prefer the 2 but I would like a old style font. I think if the number was about 16'' tall and in proportion in width that would be fine. I am going to paint the rad tomorrow in semi gloss black. Trying to do this like a 15 y/o would do in the early to mid 50s. Not too much is perfect.
    Thanks for the ideas.

I used a site called "decalboy.com" to make a computer-cut stencil for the lettering design on the smoker I built. you upload an image file and they ship you a peel-and-stick single use stencil. The one for the smoker was about $12.

The adhesive is pretty low-tack, so I'm not sure it would stick to your radiator. Another option would be to have it laser-cut in thin plastic or sheetmetal someplace like bigbluesaw.com. The advantage of the adhesive stencil is that you can have any kind of shape -- not just connected bits like a traditional stencil.

Or use font selection on the computer then send it to the copier the size needed then transfer to stencil board, cereal box, construction paper, butcher paper, ect ect.

If your building a race car, good ! If your putting # on a driver for the street, why? # don't belong there,an are like sign that is [fake]. All an all,you can do your own, more race cars had # added by nonpro painters then had nice ones by a pro. Gooegl Imega for # an style you like, you could maybe blow up a print out with computor to make your own pattern.

  19. Based on that criteria, cutting it out of a piece of beer carton cardboard, holding it up to the radiator and making a couple of quick p***es with spray paint and you're done. If you want crisper edges, the low tack vinyl stencil would be the way to go. The only trick is knowing how to peel the backing off gradually as you roll or pat down the stencil. I suggest starting in the middle, roll and pat down one side and then do the other half also from the middle.
Don't over think it and don't let it scare you. It's reversible if you don't like the results. Have fun with it.

Wrong time of year, but I would talk to the local art teacher from the high school or community college.

Was thinking the same on art student.

Contact paper roll and freehand it from a font you like. Walmart has 18"x 9 foot for $4. If you dont like the shape, keep working the edges or start again.

i wonder if you could buy a small version like they sell in the hard ware stores and set it up in front of the radiator and shine a light so it would cast a shadow on it that could be traced?
