I have a stock 48 Stude O.D. 3speed trans. Do I need to use a voltage drop to use it in a 12 volt system?

I think that you have a Borg Warner OD. If so, you'll need a 12 solenoid. I don't think a voltage drop will work, as the solenoid current draw is pretty high.

yeah, i had a resistor on mine and it didn't like it. swapped to a 12v solenoid and works great now.

Fords and Studebaker O.D.'s in many cases interchange, a 12 volt Ford solenoid is easier to find and will work in your Studebaker. They show up on "evilbay" fairly often.
