Next thing you know, someone will invent planes and bombs flown by remote control.

Well spoken Brad.....I'm 60 years old and I still say "please", "thank you" and include "ma'am" and "sir"....I do this partly because of my upbringing but mostly out of fear of retribution from my 82 year old mother if I didn't!!...... thanks

Being in the military, we are inundated with PC training constantly. Not to say that it's all bad; there are some lines you just don't cross. BUT, it seems that in a way to blanket every situation, we ban all that could somehow, someway, under any context be misconstewed as offensive, instead of dealing with situations with rational thought.

  13. This one time I opened up a door for w women walking into a drug store. She was in her late 30s. But anyway, she turns to me and says " I dont need a man to open a door for me" so I turn around a let the door close on her and tell her "Sorry about being nice, so **** off and die" She comes back out and says " You shouldnt talk like that to a woman" and i replied " You shouldnt get pissed when a guy holds a door open for you".

Brad, you say what almost everyone I know says and thinks in private ....how the hell did we get here?Every day we get **** like this...the previous day saw the Royal Navy ban pin ups in all ships and even crew lockers...in case women are offended. But what I find offensive is that it`s now ok for same *** couples to get it on in the services...does anyone care what I think???

Sting,Bono,Tony"f**kin*"Blair, Al Gore, all them do gooding celebs that preach at us to stay home huddled around the candle, to save the world, and then blow a small oilfield on little juniors fifth birthday party etc.......sorry guys for going off on one,but this stuff is driving me crazy.

Brad, you are the Man!thanks for putting in words what I was trhinking.

The RAF is only about 7-10 years behind the USAF re: PC and not offending folks...

Had new nose art on one of our Combat Talons - hot chick in armor bikini (think Rumpleminz adverts from a few years back), but nothing out of line - dubbed "Iron Maiden". Flew combat missions in OIF, got shot up even, on return to home base, some girl in maintenance said it offended her. We went back to the artist, he put full armor on - no skin showing except face & lower arms - maintenance girl still *****ed. In the middle of the night - literally - w/o any approval from anyone, the maintenance unit took the nose art off. Nose art earned with patched bullet holes.

The really sad part is, the "offended" party gets to decide what the intentions of the "perpetrator" are & what is considered offensive...how ****ed up is that?

I also liked what Brad said. He has my vote.

I also vote to see "offensive" nose art!

When I first heard who the nose art was representing, I could only imagine what they were depicting. But it really was harmless enough. Just a silohuette, no different than a mudflap girl.

It's all politics, then and now. I completely understand removing it for the sake of the women serving alongside the men in almost all capacities USAF/RAF. Times are indeed different today. It doesn't really suprise me.

It does sadden me for the sake of TRADITION, which is very important to any person serving in the military. I've seen lots of nose art from WWII recreated on today's bombers and fighters in the sandbox, commemorating the "greatest generation" before them. It does still show up, depending on how the base commander feels about it. SOP though is no nose art, I believe.

Here's an excerpt from a book by Jeffrey Ethell on the subject. (who ironically died 10 years ago today in a P-38 crash. RIP )

  19. I sure do love aircraft "Nose Art".....

I once responded to a young lady with a "thank you Ma'am" when she refilled my gl*** of "tea" ...she responded by saying "please don't call me that, I'm not that old"......I tried to explain that it was a reflection of respect and not a ***ist comment about age...she didn't get it and I quit trying to explain...left me feeling like I'd been kicked in the balls....come to think of it that was probably her primary purpose......fats

I think the fighter planes, and bombers, are the equivalent to the soldiers horse. The pilots personalize them, name them, form a stronger bond, and they become more than just an inventory tail number.

What needs to happen is for the women pilots to put nose art on their own planes. Muscle dude wearing a speedo isn't my thing, but if it boosts their morale I'm all for it!

...and yes, I'll vote for Brad.

There are regulations on it. If commissioned by an artist, must have artist's permission in writing. If commercial, must have copyright approval. Etc.

The artist that re-did all of ours only asked for a picture of the plane with the art on it. These days, it's rarely painted on - instead, it's computer graphics printed on special decal paper.

There's some leeway if all are the same for an entire unit. Have some of those at one of our Spec-Ops bases. Sometimes they'll get purged before an inspection when they can't find the supporting do***entation (previous dedicated crew chief took it with him, or whatever).

Lots of paperwork and, yes, base/wing/group commander approval...
