Sorry to hear about the job loss. 10 years ago, I chucked a 17 year teaching career and moved on. Ended up in a great management job with GE and got riffed after five years due to "downsizing". Ended up with my present job which is ideal and I couldn't ask for anything more (well, always more money is good) except if they let me off to work on my cars.

Remain positive. when things like this happen, you usually end up better off than you were before, especially if you are a good person (karma and God and all that stuff). And, though I don't know you, it sounds like you are a great guy so I'm positive you'll find something soon which you'll enjoy more.

I hate those stories. I was laid off a couple of months ago, luckily I found another job. a 61 year old man shouldn't have to look for a job. Good luck and god bless

Royal, you're welcome to come here to work, we're looking for a good mechanic, but then you'd live in the highest taxed place in america.Hopefully Iraq will be coming soon to free us!

royalshifter will be fine,"cool kats always land on their feet"! relocation is not that easy and if you own a home in california its that much harder. doing the car thing to survive "****s" if you ask most people in the business. now on a hobby level that is different kinda allows you to enjoy it. i survived the "wood industry crash" in the 80's by going to night school and getting back into school in a re-training program right after i was laid off the when the mill closed for the final time. had child support and a mortgage payment while going to school, damm near broke my spirit after the electricity kept getting shut off every other month! the thing about school is meeting people that recognize your potental and ***ist you in redirecting you for jobs that fit you. good luck!

I feel for ya bro, things are getting tougher every day.I work in the city trying to file for bankrupcy thats in the news latey, just had a staff meeting today and the GM's "stragic action plan" for the next year includes researching the cost of "contracting out " the park maintenance costs and comparing them with "our" actual costs, that statment has 17 guys on edge right now. best of luck in what ever you decide to do, Brad said it best... we do what we have to for our family FIRST,everything else can be worked out.

Tough deal RoyalShifter. Hope all works out in the end.

We can all whine about the reason our situation is what it is. Bottom line. DO Something about it! That means be an informed voter and be part of the process. Educate yourself. Focus on your dreams. Work hard. Pay attention to the details.

I was fortunate. After twenty years in agricultural sales/management, I was out of a job. I am a farm boy through and through, but a car guy as well. Drove past a small dealership going out of business, stopped in and decided to give it a go. I work hard, pay attention to detail and now am having a great time buying/selling cl***ics and customs in addition to AMERICAN made cars/trucks and SUVs. www.topnotchvehicles.com .

We can only let somebody else ruin our day if we choose to let them. I am rooting for your success in your own rodshop, Royal Shifter. Take the plunge. You will have a blast.

    Best wishes

That ****s I know the feeling. The company I work for just closed the doors after 30 years. I am out of work, 65 years old and six months from retirement. same story all over, good luck.

    Sorry for ya bud.

I had 14yrs. in at a 100 yr old GE lighting plant. We closed this feb.
I've been without a job for 5 months and counting.

You know those awesome little sqiggly light bulbs the government wants everyone to use?

Every single one, no matter the brand, is made in China....:(

So now I drive by that 100 yr old plant, and remember that we were always in the top3 best producing, lowest defect lighting plants in the GE lighting division...woo wee for us.
