Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Grumpy, Jan 9, 2008.

  1. Also, if it's any consolation, I applied at Evendale at the same time I applied here. Still haven't heard from em either. ;)
If you hear anything, LMK. Cincy is about halfway home. :)

Grumpy, with your experience in maintenance you could go into most production plants anywhere and be considered for employment. I've done the maintance gig for 25 years and when we looked for prospects for hire the first thing that was asked of the interviewe was to describe thier problem solving skills.
I lost my job to plant closure last year and have been off work ever since. My situation is different though, I put my wife through nurseing school when I was working and now she makes double what I made. So now I stay here, (home), take care of the kids and house, oh and work out of the garage building things for people.
Look into thier severance package and look into another company to work for. It sounds like you've got the skills to go where you want. A company change could be a real breath of fresh air for you. Consider food packageing, (thats what I was doing), remember people got to eat!

  3. Grumpy,
First hang in there and good luck!!
I went thru this 38 years ago, didn't want to move so I took a temporary job with a small company. Well I retired from that small company Dec 06 after 37 years and becoming a part owner in 1985. The previous owners treated everybody better than family. Don't leave any avenues unexplored you never know what will turn up. Funny but I had thought a big company and a union were the way to go, but for me it turned out different, hope no one gets mad at that last remark.

Now that is a smart comment. In the lame ***ed world of globalization and selling out our own country, it's smart to consider a career that just cant be done overseas. In a lot of aspects, food packaging / processing still has to be done here (and in a lot of aspects not.)

Until the people make the govt instill laws that make businesses stop (equal trade, etc,) the "globalization" will unfortunately continue... On a positive front, i think people are starting to get really tired of it.

Tim, I was working on a GE locomotive today at work rebuilding the engine and happened to look down and noticed that the fuel pump was built in "Somwhere" Grove, PA. Holly Grove maybe? Anyway, maybe that will help....

    I'm guessing Grove City PA
They build the diesel engines for the locomotives that are built in Erie PA.

Grove City is #1 on my wish list. I can drive there in 45 minutes. That would keep my family right here. No moving involved.

I'm researching alot of plants right now.

    Thanks everyone.

I'm a retired GE (Boston / Power Generation) Apparatus Services guy.......best of luck on the relocation. Not sure if the Cinncy shop is still around - I've been out since 1998 - but that might be a place your talents could be used.

  8. Grump,
First of all sorry to hear about the closing...I went through this restructuring/downsizing job transfers/offers awhile back. Not once but 3 times over a 7 year period....it raises all sorts of hell with your emotions/nerves/appe***e and new found levels of stress.

Now the good part.... All is not doomed. This actually may be a silver lining in the cloud.

I saved severance packages from all 3 jobs, declined expense paid transfers to N Carolina, and Upstate New York. Did I do the right thing? I make at least 50% more hourly than if I would have remained with the last company (60% more than the other two also) Of all the people that did transfer to NC most, 8 of the 10 families, moved back within 2 years, some got fired, some couldn't be away from extended families and some just couldn't handle the cultural difference. Similar thing happened to the NY people but on a much smaller scale.

I qualified for job placement training to make me more employable and while going through school full time I received a small stipend to help my financial situation. Between the last severance, the stipend, and federal government covering my tuition we had no financial hardships and no change in lifestyle....for 24 months.

I finished school, I'm no longer a machinist or a quality engineer even though I have those skills to fall back on if I decide to use them. I'm a registered nurse now...I work 3 days a week and sometimes wonder how I ended up getting so much farther ahead in life from 3 downsizes which others that I have worked with had difficulty dealing with the fact that there job no longer exists.

I'm not saying that nursing is for everyone but the comment about the food service industry is spot on....I stood back and looked at the big picture. What industry will probaby grow in the next decade....service industry, healthcare etc....what pays good now and has a strong future to continue to pay well.....skilled individuals in those sectors of those industries.

Hang in there brother, the job market has changed alot over the past 15-20 years but when you can roll with the punches and make some sound financial decisions you'll be better off in the long run....

I had neighbor that worked for GE for years, they closed her plant down and offered her an excellent severance package and corporate training....she took it and used it to pay her mortgage off then went back to school and became a para-legal, last I heard she was running for city council. Many times we'd drink a beer or two and discuss the exact situation you are in now and we both were in. Unfortunately it is more and more common...if you need anything gimme a holler I'll help in any way I can

    Hey Grump
For what it's worth there was an article in the Erie Times News last week on the GE Plant here and the super outlook for the future.
The Erie Plant is not just Locomotives now, they make refit kits for trains, hugh generators, and some other industrial stuff.

    Just some info.

I work at the north Alabama refrigerator plant. Been there 18 years. Hate to here about your job. We lose about 50 people a year from retirement, quit, fired or worse. They hire a new group every year but on a new lower pay scale that's tops out about 70% of our pay. We have transfers from Cicero, Bloomington and Columbia. Most of these have been here for 10 years or more. Down here you have to put up with all the Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee football **** and the radio stations ****.
