Your quitting just because your being laid off? I'd just sit back for the 2-4 weeks, collect the Unemployment benefits and hope they don't find me in the shop working on my projects. [IMG]

What Petejoe said! Take a vacation. Get stuff done around the house. As long as it really is only for 2-4 weeks.

Man, I just got laid off till probably October or later! This doesen't happen all the time. My job will be there later, so I'm takin the $, and gonna do some side work and maybe volenteer to teach the illiterate to read. (but no spelling lessons from me!)
    Take advantage of it.

Grumpy, Thats gotta rock having the whole summer off, what type of work do you do?

CL***Y, Just go with it man. the first week or so cash will be tight then the checks start coming in. Like these guys said, do stuff around the house, work on your car or whatever you've been putting off because of lack of time. I was on strike for 6 weeks a few months back & the labor board ruled that it was a Lockout, so I was able to collect unemployment plus picket pay. It was nice to get paid to do my own stuff & go to the ongoing cookout/party at the picket line a few times a week.

clssy, I understand what you are saying. I was there 10-11 years ago.
my job wasn't good, got laid off alot. I worked for cash for a landscaper and collected unemployment.
Now, I work for GE, as a machinist. so the pay is..well, much better, and we get 80% of our pay while laid-off.
so, I may not be the best example.
So now I just take their money, lay around for 4 or so months, and enjoy.
But, if the place closes and goes to Mexico/china/hondurus
    I'm ****ED!
good luck clssy56, hope things work out for you

  12. Lemme see if I have this right, you're and AutoCAD certified draftsman and you've been doing shipping clerk jobs? What gives? CAD detailers and designers are in high demand out this way, I know one guy who does drawings for a job in LA from his house in AZ, have you tried getting back into CAD stuff? Just a thought.........

Ya that's right CAD is dead in St. Louis. I know 3 other drafters not in the field in STL. If you have any info, send it my way.. [IMG] I've tried getting back in, but nothing around here. I tried Monster.com the 1st time around and sent resumes all around the US and not one ever got back to me. So yes, if you have any ideas.... I am all ears.

Sounds to me like most of your problem is just being bummed out. Take a day or two to do things you've been ignoring, get back in the swing, and buck up. Finding a good at***ude towards it all in there somewhere will help the most. Being out of work is major stress, and it takes being proactive to get out of the cycle. Not always easy, but always worth it. Okay, session's over. I won't charge you, first one's free...

  15. Hey there CLSSY56...

If you would like some constructive input, here is mine. Don't take offense to this but I think your resume could use some elbow grease. In this day and age, with the amount of people out of work and competing for available jobs, your resume is probably the most important factor in finding that new job.

It looks like you have some decent experience, but your resume doesn't have anything that would grab an employers attention at first glance.

In most cases, an HR person is going to look at your resume for 30-60 seconds, and if you don't make some sort of impression in that time frame, you will go into the "No" pile.

I think you should seek some help locally or on the net, try to get some actual examples of professional resumes. I have never hired someone to write a resume for me, but I have had positive feedback from employers on my resume. I hope I don't sound like a know it all, but I just thought I might be able to help.

    Good Luck.

Sheeyut, I was outta work for over 10 months... it was FUN!!

GET back into CAD and drafting... work with your brain, not your back. Get yourself a POS computer, jack some software off the net and get going. Hell, you got a computer if you're here... you may have to go back to entry level cause what you did was so long ago... But I bet THAT pays better than $8...

LIEING on your resume is fiiiine as long as you have your story straight and there is absolutely know way for a prospective employer to find out... know what I mean???

If a tree ****s in the forest and no one hears it... [IMG]

YES, the job market is still ****, but not for those who are, and can show they are motivated. What do all homeless people have in common? A defeatist at***ude.

I bet it does, but no one is hiring or atleast advertising. I have a descent computer and some good software, but I don't know where I would begin (talk about a hefty fine if you got caught with a $30K program and making money with it...) I have talked to my friends about getting together and start a company of draftsmen, but nothing has come from the talk cause we all need the "right now" cash. Honestly if anyone can point me the right dirrection or has ideas, p*** them along please... I've spent 8 months on unemployment trying to get a CAD job and all I got was Schwan's Ice Cream [IMG]

Any advice to getting my resume up to par? I'm tired of living paycheck to paycheck... I wanna grab the world by it's tail again [IMG] (boy do I miss that feeling)

  20. Been out of work since Sept 2 and I'm busier now than when I was working...go figure. Can't seem the to find the time to do stuff that I use to do???My company went to Mexico and sent me packing with a huge severance (26 weeks) and I was able to qualify for retraining through NAFTA! I was a Machinist then I got one of them degrees in Quality engineering. Now I'm training to be an Registered Nurse. What a portfolio I've managed to build!

Take the time and get caught up with the little stuff that always seems to never get done. A little R&R for the head.
