I believe the sound was dubbed on after from a GT-40 race car.... And while we are on the subject of chases.... Mc Q with The Duke.... and of course Your only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.....
I reallize it was dubbed but the sounds during shifting might have sounded cool to some but not me. I like how the charger at times also sounded like a stick shift and he never took his right hand off the wheel.......Ok Im just too critical and is why no one wants to watch a movie with me.
You da man muttley, I was gonna' bring up Vanishing Point but you beat me to it!! That movie and Bullit are the reason I'm a Motard to this day. Proud of it though, even my hardcore chevy friends can't watch VP and not drool a little!!!
You have to download a program like you tube downloader. Just do a google search for "download youtube videos" and you should be able to find something.
I just read "McQueen's Machines". It's a new book about the machines Steve owned and drove in the movies. Great book!!! It goes into detail about the Bullitt chase scene. The Charger actually misses the gas station and goes behind as everyting explodes! You can see this if you look hard. I counted that the Charger loses 5 hupcaps during the chase....
The driver of the Mustang in Bullit was Bud Ekins.I got to be good friends with him over the years. He was a great guy. They wanted him to do it because he wasn't a "trained" driver like McQueen. They thought he'd look like a regular cop driving. They told him to show up at 5AM and then they told McQueen to show up at 10 AM. McQueen was pretty livid when he figured out what had happened. He told Bud:"Its bad enough that you do my motorcycle stunts for me but when you do my driving too,it makes me look like a pussy". Then he asked Bud where he learned to drive like that."I dunno" was Bud's response.Bud was pretty much a natural. He also did the motorcycle stunt in there too. This was the Mustang they had parked at his Memorial in December.Bud also did the jump in The Great Escape.Everyone thought that was McQueen too.It really helped McQueen's carrer.
The original Gone in 60 seconds has the most awesome chase scene ever! He runs the piss out of that Stang. And when he accidentally clips the light pole is just truly amazing.
My buddy and I (both Mopar Freaks) go to a showing of Vanishing Point in the early 80s at an Art theatre. We get out to climb into my Blue/Black '72 340 cuda. Go to the local 7-11 for a 6 pack and fog up the place leaving. Get out onto the street and realize there is a cop parked (lights out) in the gas station across the street. Don't even get a block. Argue that all misbehavin' was on private property, sucessfully, but are told "go home and don't let me see you out again tonight". Proceed back to the house and go through the 6'er. The ol' lady shows up in my other car, and we proceed to take it (Blue/White '70 Barracuda) out to look for the cop. Good thing we didn't, but boy was that a fun night....foolish youth
i think the chase is on about one hour after the movie starts, thats when I start watching. it was on last week, and me and the boy cranked up the surround sound and had it on the big screen.
Yep, one of my favorite quotes, that and the one from Vanishing Point, "Takes a Mopar to catch a Mopar!"
I love Bullitt and am kind of a McQueen nerd. I really wish I had a highland green 68. There is just so much to love about Bullitt. Like how the car shows up in the rear view mirror to the guy buckling up his seat belt leading up the the chase. To me it is a perfect car chase. werent they supposed to race across the golden gate but couldn't get permission?
