As some of you probably know, our ol' buddy Bush is trying to take Overtime pay away. Our not to far distant ancestors shed Blood and Sweat and Tears getting the Labor Laws passed. They protect all of us, whether you are Union or not.

This is a link to an official Petition to get this stopped. If you want to keep getting overtime when your Boss makes you work over 40 hours a week, you better sign this thing.

So is it NO pay for over 40- or straight time over 40, i.e. no time and a half?

I don't get OT pay anyway. But I did when I worked my way through Engineering school, otherwise I couldn't have paid for it.

And what do they mean "erode the 40 hr workweek"?

I agree with you, and I don't agree with Bush's politics. However, I respectfully decline on making negative comments as I've been left with the impression that Ryan is a Bush supporter, and this is his house.

I'd rather talk about cars anyway. It's a lot less depressing. [IMG]

The only thing that keeps a lot of Companys from forcing their employees to work overtime is the fact they they have to pay more for it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but most of what I have gotten done on my Truck has been payed for with Overtime pay.

Do they get time and a half for overtime in Singapore ?

Or any of those other fucking places where OUR jobs are going to ?

The Wallmart and Harbor Freight mentality will kill us all,
and we are being sold out by those who have already cashed in.

I didn't intend for this to be a Shit Slinging Contest. This is simply to show where the petition is for those of us who would like to keep our overtime pay.

If my Boss didn't have to pay overtime, he would have me working 7 days a week.

overtime pay? 40 hr work week?? I dont have either cause Im a software engineer. But still I dont see the corelation between no more overtime pay and being forced to work more hours. Last time I checked they cant force you to work more then 40 hours a week. I am never told to work more then 40 hours but I do a lot of times, its just part of the job. Not saying I agree with it. Just dont understand everyones saying no overtime pay = I will be foreced to work more.

I love people who get it (in the non gay way)
As a business owner I understand the wanting to save money thing (time and a half = taxes and a half matched by the company)but shit, peoples time is worth money, I would rather be at home working on my car, playing with the kids or doing anything else than spending MORE time at work.

And if Big Business gets away with this one, how long before they decide to go after the 40 hour week too?

As for Companys not being able to Force you to work overtime, you must lead a sheltered working life. Nearly every Company I have ever worked for has "Forced" overtime on their employees at one time or another. Firing you for not working overtime may be illegal, but there are plenty of other ways to put pressure on.

I know plenty of People that have been Layed Off, or "Phased out" because they refused to work Saturdays. Just ask TrailerEd , he can tell you all about getting layed off because of Overtime.

I kind of like spending time with my Hobbys and my Family. If I am going to have to give up one of my days off, they should have to compensate me for it.

12. dude, you and your friends need to find some new jobs.

And why are you on the computer in the middle of the day?

Shouldnt you be at the people's factory #4?

That would be nice. Only thing keeping me from doing it is the fact that there are about 20 other small Fabrication Shops in my area. Saturation of the market means working harder for less money.

I am Union, and loss of overtime would affect Union Members worse than most. I get time and a half on Saturday and Doubletime for Sundays or Holidays. Contrary to popular belief, the Unions don't do this out of Greed, they do it to Discourage companys from making their people work 7 days a week.

If companies don't have to pay their employees time and a half to keep them working when they'd normally be at home, or for that matter pay them ANYTHING, they have no real incentive to not work them 40+ hours a week. It'd actually be in a company's financial best interests to hire less employees and just make them work way more hours, because they don't have to pay for that extra work!

I've known several people, including my dad, who had jobs where they often had to work extremely long hours to get stuff done (when the company really should have had more employees to begin with), and were only compensated in accumulating paid time off. But if they choose to take their time off when it's inconvenient for the company, it hurts them at work. The company can't just outright say "You're fired for not working overtime when we want you to" or "You're fired for taking your time off when we wanted you here", but that's really only a technicality.

I half ways support it...

Most of the manufacturing places around here cant keep any money to bank on for next year... and the workers are content to drag their conglomerative ass to work as many hours as possible while still acomplishing nothing.

I like the concept... but I think we as workers have corrupted it. Over done that market and not produced enough for the dollar, which is why we're being layed off! If they can do it cheaper elsewhere we've got 2 choices... 1 we can try to change the pay scale in China... 2 we can try and change the pay scale here to get a product thats still competetive!

Me personally, I'd like to do nothing and make enough to live off doing it, but it just doesnt work that way! [IMG]

On that note... I'd prefer to have overtime pay cut then to have to pay more in taxes on anything and everything so that we can study the social paterns of the moose that are offended that they will have to walk around an oil pipeline up in alaska!

Bush gets my loyalty in 04! [IMG]

these new revolutionaries will have to contend with technology that can pick up heat signatures through concrete... anything other than a military coup would be wiped out before it began.

They recently raised our limit from 48 to 60 hours a week.
They can legally require you to work up to that limit, and if your not cooperative, you WILL be unemployed.

Some industries are worse than others.Tier 1 automotive suppliers, and Jobbing Shops are among the worst.

I'm a Teacher. I'm contracted for 37.5 hours a week, and on an average week, I'm at school 70-80 hours. I don't technically even have a full time job, and overtime doesn't exist.

I see your point because I work summers at a Harley shop, and I like my overtime. But for my primary career, I'm getting screwed royally. Good thing it's not about the money.

Then he is welcome to Boot me Zeke.

People all across the United States will be affected by this if it goes through. I did not put this on the Forum as a political Statement, I put it on here so the people who will be affected by it know where to go to sign a petition against it.

If it does not affect you, ignore it.
