Just finished up the Caudron C.460 racer replica. Have done a little taxi testing and expect to begin flight testing early next week. Now maybe I can get back on the roadster project.

Looks very nice. I've a 1/32 model of the craft. What are you using for engine? Ranger?

Cool plane, how much replica did you have to do? From scratch? Or did you have some of the plane to start with. Don't make much difference. I love the plane.--TV

We were going to use a Ranger, but ran across LOM series of engines. This one is LOM M337CE. Made in the Czech republic, 260 h.p., fuel injected, supercharged, constant speed prop. Same engine that was used the Zlin aerobatic planes. The plane is scratch built. The only drawings we had were some 3 views and a bunch of pictures. Looking forward to flying it, should be a real hot rod, although it is a little blind in the 3 point at***ude.

Whoa, wait, that's a real plane and NOT an R/C one? Wow.

My brother and I are real enthusiast of the golden Era of air racing. I've been a pilot for 30 + years; fairly accomoplished aerobatic pilot. Nice piece of work there.

    Wow!!!

Why bother with the whole airplane? Just glue a couple wings onto the biggest engine ever made and hang on!?!?!?

Seriously, with that mile long cowl, and tiny ****pit, it almost looks like a Roth cartoon!

That thing looks like 500 mph standing still!

Does it perform as well as it's "bad ***" image would imply? And +1 on wanting to know more about the engine!

    VERY COOL!
I used to fly (not at that level - ultralights), still do RC and a few plastics mostly 1/32. Good luck with the test flights. So you had to draw up your own plans? Amazing! I love the Golden Age Racers, more of a WW I guy myself though.

Got through the first few flights with no drama. Actually flies pretty good, although any landing that's 100mph in a three point at***ude is sure exciting.

  19. Wow...I used to build aircraft for our Defense Dept but nothing anywhere near that beautiful...I 'tip my cap' to you Sir!! I'm curious, what airfoil did you settle on for the major wing chord?

I also have a great love and respect for the Golden Era of air racing and wish I had a certain special Doc Brown 88mph DeLorean to take it all in one day...I own the Rocketeer on DVD and watch it quite often for the flight scenes...and the young Jennifer Connelly character ain't bad either...

Magnificent... I've been a life-long fan of racing planes from the first Gordon Bennett to the last Reno event. I have a written history, through dozens of volumes, from start to present and I doubt if it's anywhere near complete... Aviation history is a BIG deal in my life, but none so important as the Golden Age. The advances in technology during that time were primarily the result of individual efforts (hot rodders, pure and simple).

The Caudron is beautiful. A great piece of workmanship.

How about more information on some of the challenges encountered during construction?? I know it's not traditional hot rod oriented, per se, but it is definitely hot rod love....

What's the big deal? Fly in full flaps and set 'er down at 20mph or so......seen those Alaskan bush pilots do it.

    HAHAhahhaaaa

Anyway, BEAUTIFUL airplane! Wicked looking hot rod if you ask me!

When you get right down to it, all projects are very similar. A series of problems that have to solved. The biggest challenge is taking each problem head on and solving it before jumping to the next thing. It's easy to skip over the hard stuff and work on the easy or fun stuff, but then you wind up with nothing but problems at the end and it's really no fun.
If anyone's interested, I put a bunch of the construction pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/AeroCraftsman

  29. Aero Hot Rod. They built some great looking racers. That is really amazing.

  30. I remember every single flight I made in my Homebuilt's as the most mentally harrowing thing I've ever done in my life... and those were STAL designed!!!

I would FREAK with a knife-edged winged hotrod!

Closest I came to that was the first time landing a Pitts S2B... blind as a bat and 108 over the fence!!!

What did you use for your landing Gear???
