Worked in a Street Rod Shop for 4 years, then did collision for the last year and a half, lost my job there about 3 weeks ago. Been wanting to do my own shop, so figured what the hell, so I am opening my own doing restoration and custom body and paint work in Conroe, Texas.

I'm an itenerant Bass Picker, most of the time. The rest of the time I'm either the house pool boy, lawn boy or gofer. Then when time allows, I'm the shop hanger-on at Ross Automotive. :D l

Seriously, retired DOD civilian since 4/05, last 8 years Avionics Program Manager on the Stealth Bomber. :p

Graduate student, UNLV. Getting that Master's degree that every boss I ever had said I needed...... Get to teach some College Algebra. Lots of fun. mixed in with some stuff that seems a lot like work. As a note, being a grad student is great, but the pay sucks.

Before that (working backwards), I taught school a little; was in school to get the teaching certificate; was a proud member of the World's best Air Force (Just briefly; 24years, two days). They used to let me pilot the handsome, high-performance C-130 Hercules. Damn, I miss that.....

WOW, what an impressive list of jobs!

I've worked as an auto repair mechanic in small shops, and two Chrysler dealerships. I was a machine repairman in factory maintenance in a forging shop. rebuilt forge presses, the 100,000 ton presses that formed lots of brass and alumium componets. They have 2' diameter rod and 3' diameter main bearings, 12' diameter clutch discs, and 12" wide by 4' long brake pads! I've also worked in machine repair a different factory where I repaired smaller presses and rebuilt their two upsetters (that is the machine that hammer forges the head on bolts.)

After that I sold life insurance for a few years. Then I worked in a series of welding/ fabrication shops, from a small two man shop up to one that employed 300 guys.

About 11 years ago I opened my own one man welding shop. Things I do range from auto floor board rust repair, suspension mounting point relocation, to welding the broken handle on a push mower. I weld steel, cast iron, and alumium. Just a little jobber shop. The last couple of years have gotten pretty bad around here, 3 of the 4 major employers in this town of 30K have cut their work force in half, and one of those has almost closed compleatly. As opposed to sitting here looking out the window, a year ago I started building my Desk Top Art Work little cars. Thanks to the HAMB and a few others I'm still hanging in there paying my bills. Hopefully things will pick up around here and I can have a little cash to start playing again. Between now and then, buy more Desk Top Art Work, I need the money. :D Gene

I coach a swim team. I also build hot rods and motercycles ( sometimes i even get paid to do it).

Now if i could make some real money. This college degree is worthless.

  11. If I told you I would have to kill you :D :D :D Seriously though, I don't work in that area. Sent you a PM. I work in a different area with barbed wire, guards and barriers.

This is a real neat post with all the very diverse occupations and fields that everyone works in. Or has worked in for those lucky retirees that don't have a job that requires their daily attendance.

My work and personal life no longer seem to be separate...and that's actually fine with me. My life revolves around hot rods and motorcycles (mostly of the traditional chopper variety)...and I somehow manage to make enough money to eat and pay rent.

Up until the beginning of summer last year, I was a sign maker for 4 years doing pinstriping and artwork on the side. Then I went to California for a month to work for/with Jimmy White, and had what alcoholics call a "moment of clarity."

I stopped looking for a new job, moved into a shop, and turned what I love into what I do to make ends meet.

I do pretty much everything that can be done to a car or bike except upholstery (maybe someday)...from concept sketches to the finished product.
