O/T Curious what all you hambers do for work?

i, too, have resisted responding to this, but it looks like it's gonna go on 'til everyone tells all.

i've got a job title that doesn't mean squat. most gubbmnt titles don't mean much. but what i do is to make sure that construction/renovation projects get designed and built at the VA hospital in columbia, missouri. so i spend my time communicating with architects/engineers and contractors. oh, and pushing the paperwork to make sure things get done and the boss' a** gets covered.

Okay, so here's what keeps me from working on the rusty caddy...

I work full time, installing car audio, video, and security at the largest electronics retailer in the nation.I've been installing 12 volts for the last 10 years.
I also work for a local all-ages concert venue as a bouncer, and special events at the local Hogs and Heifers.
Most importantly, I'm a new Daddy.

When I was younger I always tried to find work that would allow me to be mobile and work on my projects. IE Welder, machinist, mechanic,operateing engineer.

Now I'm older, broke and busted. Find a career that interests you and won't destroy your body, stick too it and build your own shop with your own tools. Enjoy playing with your cars or bikes or both.

I work at a school for kids with behavioral probs
we have 15 year old coke dealers, a kid on a murder charge and any Idea how difficult it is to teach a kid when he's so stoned he cant speak!!!!

 

I'm a mechanical engineer at Raytheon in El Segundo, California. Used to work in some local body shops but now I do that for fun. Lots of cool stuff going on in the aerospace field these days.

I own an auto parts store. Nothing exciting, sell parts for everyting from model T's to new plastic mobiles. I specialize in hard to find parts for older cars. I enjoy helping guys and gals fix up older cars. Also sell Offenhauser direct, HAMBers get the best pricing!!!

Automotive engineer for a major automotive company. I test the shit that people design and try to break it. We call it shake and bake. Will be retired in about a year and then I can build some more cars, Ha! Ha! if I have the money. I will be the one on the side of the road with a cardboard sign.

Started out as a High School Art Teacher for 6 years .....dropped out and spent a year in the US Virgin islands crewing on sailboats and running a hot dog stand.....back to the States and into Grad School......two Master's Degrees....Administration and Student Personnel Services.....spent 27 years as a Guidance Counselor and Department Head...retired after 33 years in the EdBiz and was part owner of Levon Helm's Classic American Cafe in the French Quarter of New Orleans......

Retired for the last six years and happy to be the Vice President of the WHEELERS Hot Rod & Dry Lakes Racing Club........Charter member of the WHEELERS 200 MPH Club!

I currently work at wal mart, but have.......Worked for WRE race rods, who happen to make top fuel rods, worked for rhett rotten and the wall of death motorcyle stunt show, swift motorcycles as a metal polisher/r&d department consultant, and busted tires...whew...all that, and I'm only 24!

Graduated from college and worked in Biotech doing gene research 6 years

Chronological order, overlapping and still continuing.......

15+ years of auto restoration and custom one-off heavy equipment (logging) design and fabrication (family owned businesses from the time I was 9 until my early 20's).

5 years in a high performance Ford, Mustang and Shelby specific restoration shop. - No GM's allowed.

These days.......

7 years trained and certified Mercury Marine technician. 6 years apprentice high performance/competition engine machining and building. All makes, any vintage.

...and how I manage to put a roof over my head.

17+years - Analytical microscopy/Industrial Forensics. Use optical microscopy, SEM-EDAX, TEM, Micro-FTiR and other rediculously expensive analytical tools and problem solving skills to figure out what happened when and who did what that caused this, that, or the other to break, burn-up or otherwise fail....and most importantly who peed in the coffee pot, is that really sugar on that stale old donut and who the hell ate the candy bar I was saving for break?

Part time auto technician (ASE Master Tech) have turned a wrench on and off for about 15 years.


Spent 1999-2004 as a race car parts fabricator and engine builder, then realized being self employed wasn't really as glamourous as I was trying to make it.

Now I'm turning a wrench 4 days a week, and trying like hell to finish my first complete hotrod the other three, eventual plan is to build and sell 3-4 cars a year and call it "employment" Luckily my wife is a Federal "law enforcement officer" and makes pretty good money with killer benefits
